I can't say enough good things about the Shooters at Marietta Gardens. When calling on Wed., June 14th, at about lunch time to discuss some unforeseen shipping concerns, Ms. Shooter said she would get the plants dug and shipped immediately. I received them on Friday, June 16th very well packed. The roots and the newspaper they were wrapped in was still damp. The daylilies were all a vibrant green, nothing was brown or yellow. The divisions were absolutely outstanding, all large, some double, triple or quadruple what I paid for. The Shooter's generosity was outstanding. The bonus plants were high dollar and also contained multiple divisions. All told, I probably received more free and bonus plants than my total order. I'm sure of it!
I'm going down to visit at the end of the month to see these nice people, I can't wait. I've planted the plants, shaded them from the intense summer sun with beach umbrellas. Almost a week after planting with temperatures in the 90s and still only minimal expected browning. Some have started new leave production already. This is a top notch operation. I highly recommend that anyone interested in daylilies buy here!!! Stephen Smith, Statesville NC

Well it's 2008 and now my 3rd purchase from Marietta Gardens! These are really great people to work with when buying daylilies and just great people when not buying daylilies! I had a decent sized order and received THREE of their introductions for a BONUS PERCENTAGE of right at 85%!!!!! That tops everybody else. And get this, the Bonus we most wanted, Faye sent it!!! Faye goes out of her way to help the customer, beyond the call of duty. Plus, the plants themselves, six fans for the price of two?? You do the math. Buy here folks.

I received my first order from Marietta's on May 1st. Wonderful, large, healthy fans. I placed my order on April 26, and got a phone call from John only a day later advising me that my order was filled and had been shipped. Extremely fast service! I also received a couple of emails from them telling me about my bonus plants. I was ordering special plants for a Memorial Garden for my Mother, and they picked a special dl, that would fit in perfectly. They are the most considerate, helpful sellers and their daylilies are of superb quality. I will definitely buy from them again, and recommend them to everyone. You will not be dissapointed in the dl's or the service. They treat you as if you've placed a million dollar order, even if it's only for a few dl's! Great people!

My order arrived today also. The plants were the biggest I have ever seen. Most were 3 fans at least. They included a note to contact them if I needed any help. John called me when I placed the order because he was out of a few, and he helped me pick subs that worked with my color preferences. Marietta has thousands of plants in the catalog, yet they knew of the exact ones that would please me, and treated me as if I were their biggest customer. Awesome! Everything worked out perfectly. I will order again because this company does everything right, and has a superior product.

Received my first order from Marietta today and I'm thrilled. The communication was first-rate, the packing was terrific, and most importantly -- the plants are EXCELLENT.

I ordered 43 different cultivars and not one was undersized. Three of the plants in my original order were not available, and the substitutes were triple the value of my original selections. The bonus plants were also beyond my expectations, valued at about 50% of my order.

So far, Marietta has provided the most positive experience I've had purchasing daylilies on-line, and they'll be the first to get my repeat business. Thanks John, Faye and Elizabeth! Chris, Marshall, MI

I can't say enough good things about Marietta Gardens! I placed a fairly small order for DLs in the lowest price range. John Shooter called me to tell me that a couple were only tiny plants, and asked if he could substitute much more expensive ones (I was delighted, of course.) They arrived exactly when I had requested, preceeded by an email shipping notice. The daylilies were large -- double to quadruple fan divisions -- and had healthy root systems. And he had included bonuses worth more than the value of my entire order!

The selection of daylilies is excellent, and I like the website. John himself was a delight to chat with on the phone. I'll be back for more!

I have never gotten such good customer service from anywhere!

The first time I ordered from John, Faye, and Elizabeth Shooter's Marietta Gardens I was very new to Daylilies. They spent a lot of time sending emails back and forth with me so that I could make my selections.

One of the plants I ordered died by the end of summer, so the next year when I ordered again, I asked if they had had problems with that particular cultivar, or if I had just choosen one that did not like my zone 5. I stressed that I was not complaining because the rest had done great, and the bonus they sent more than compensated me for my loss. (It was one of their intros abt $40 value)

I recieved a phone call from John that day, and he insisted on replacing it.

One of the one's I ordered for this spring turned out to be unavailable, and John called again to let me know and ask if he could substitute something else. He had not only picked one that was much more expensive than the $12 one I ordered, but had taken the time to choose one that he thought would be special to me. He's sending me "Cathy Cute Legs" a 2005 intro.

All of the plants I have recieved from them have been very nice sized and healthy. Even the one that died appeared to be nice mature healthy fans when it arrived. Plants die of unknown causes from all sources once in a while.

I highly recommend these folks!

In addition, the email correspondence was quick and they seemed to want to help out if there were any issues (of which there were none). Good prices, too, and a large selection on their website (take note that I was more inclined to order since it was easy to order and pay online). An overall excellent experience.

I placed an order for 7 plants from Marietta Gardens in August 2005. After recieving a phone call that one of the plants I had ordered was sold out for this season, I received the order withing two days. While I was grateful for the quick turnaround, I was VERY dissapointed in the quality of the plants. Most of the plants were very small and pale, as if they had been out of the ground for a while. Of the 7 plants I ordered, 4 died within 2 weeks of planting, from what I deduced was crown rot (I have several hundred cultivars, and this was the first time I had experienced this problem, so I do not believe that they were planted incorrectly). I sent several emails to the Shooters, and did not get one response. I was unable to find a "satisfaction guarantee" on their website or in their catalog, and obviously they were not concerned about my repeat business. They have a great selection, and usually the best prices around, but VERY POOR customer service. I will not purchase from them again unless I cannot find a plant I want elsewhere.

On March 6th, 2006, edmoejewel changed the rating from negative to neutral and added the following:

Practically as soon as I posted my previous rating, Mr. Shooter called and offered to replace all plants that were dead. He said that the best way to contact them if you have an issue that you would like to have resolved is by phone. He suggested ordering earlier in the growing season (my order was placed in August), less heat stress on the plants. He also stressed that the plants are dug at the time the order is placed, they are not pre-dug and stored. Based on this phone conversation, I will now be more apt to try another order.

Half my Marietta order of 5 daylilies were very small, poorly rooted plants. One unattached fan had one strand of root attached… the two others severed. I emailed my dissatisfaction with a picture of this order to Marietta, noting the website and invoice did not have any stated procedure for returns. After not receiving an answer for one week I emailed again. Mr Shooter then called our residence and proceeded to query the Lady of the House about my experience growing daylilies as I was not at home. Mr. Shooter called back later.. ignoring anything I attempted to say.. talking over my words. After this continued for several minutes I’d had my fill. I used Mr. Shooter’s tactic on him.. insisting on an answer to my question: “if you were a customer receiving this order would you be satisfied with it?” I never received an answer this question.. he hung the phone up when his tactics were employed against him.

Around a week later a refund check arrived.. the postage added insufficient for a return mailing of the plants. I had no knowledge of this coming and had given the ‘bonus’ plant such as it was away… a full return wasn’t possible. So I returned this check promptly-- voided out.

In 30+ inbound daylily orders here over 3-4 yrs these are the worst quality plants I’ve received. I can understand mistakes being made but whoever packaged and dug with order couldn’t have cared less—sending a fan with one root strand attached. The other two unsatisfactory plants were so small there’s no expectation of a bloom this season. While some daylilies do not bloom after being moved and shipped, a plant should be sent having enough root system to have a chance of blooming this season. Those tiny, recently lined out fans sent were not worth their price.

Mr. Shooter completely ignored anything I said in the phone conversation. His manner in the previous call was condescending and out of line. His whole manner of treatment of a customer was just plain rude. I garden and grow daylilies for enjoyment and do not need or will not tolerate this kind of treatment.

Never again.

This would have been a glowing positive review had I not received a mislabelled plant, as all of the plants arrived healthy and thrived. And, of course, I understand that mistakes do happen. It was the lack of any response whatsoever to repeated emails - those emails asking what the plant might be, so I could correctly label it, NOT asking for a replacement - that has made me decide not to order from Marietta gardens again. There are numerous other growers who are selling cultivars that I want to buy and will respond to questions and resolve issues.
