The Miho Satsuma mandarin orange tree I ordered arrived three days after shipping, and is tall, healthy and beautiful. The tree had many branches with full growth and leaves aplenty. Perfect specimen, easily three years old, great quality tree.
Although the tree arrived in a small black plastic container, it needed to be immediately replanted. The container was too small for the tree to remain in, and was only half full of soil (expect to immediately replant is my point). The tree was safely and securely packaged and it shipped very well (Note: be sure to open the box on the heavy end, where the container or root ball is, and gently slide out the tree... this will avoid tearing the leaves/branches).
BEWARE: First, a little background: the new owners, who purchased the nursery last year, are the nephew (and his wife) of the former owner. They are not necessarily "sticking with" the representations in the catalog or the online descriptions of certain products. For example, I purchased four of their advertized citrus tree planters for my other dwarf citrus trees. According to the online description and the catalog (which I printed off from their website!), each planter was supposed to contain an insert that helps prevent root-rot by increasing drainage. I purchased the planters solely for that reason. When I spoke with Julie, one of the new owners, she said that the drainage insert is no longer being made and is not available. Fine, but change the description on the website, revise the catalog (or take it off the website) and reduce the price of the planter!! She did not offer to take anything off the price of the planters, even when I told her that the reason I bought the planters was for the drain insert. If I just wanted plastic planters, I could have saved a ton of money and just gone to Home Depot. Julie was polite, but very nonchalant about everything ("well, we're the new owners"... as if being new owners means you don't need to meet the representations made in your current catalog or website.) We have taken numerous measures to ensure the continued quality of citrus trees produced and shipped from our nursery, and are pleased to know that our customers concur. The previous owners (with whom we have no family relation) began shipping containerized trees for the primary purpose of preventing transit and transplant shock. Indeed, some of our larger specimens should be repotted immediately because of their well-established root systems. Other smaller varieties may work well in these containers for up to a year.
Secondly, we have searched throughout our website and previous catalogues for any mention of a container with an insert to promote better drainage. Being that we have never advertised or sold such a product, we were curious. Our search was to no avail. We did, however, locate a gift set in our 2005 catalogue which included the Flow N' Grow disk -- to be placed at the base of any container. (These are no longer available as the manufacturer of this wonderful product has gone out of business.) But we think that this customer was likely referring to the "removable drain plug" in our large and medium sized 'Perfect Citrus Container.' We can only say that this product has remained the same since it was first offered in 2002, and continues to be one of our best-selling hard goods. Be that as it may, we regret any confusion its description may have caused this customer.
Finally, it is our goal to be nothing less than courteous, kind and helpful -- even on our worst day. Any customer who feels that service from Dwarf Citrus was less than perfect is encouraged to call me personally for a quick resolution to the problem. We look forward to serving citrus hobbyists for years to come and invite your calls, letters and visits to our farm.
