I ordered three delphiniums and one other plant from Wayside Gardens this year. They did send an e-mail confirmation when the order was shipped, but it took eight full days before it finally arrived. In the e-mail, it said UPS when they really meant USPS, a mistake. I was waiting for the familiar brown United Parcel Service truck to bring it by. Instead, I got a notice in our mailbox to pick it up at the Post Office. Either way, it finally arrived.

But, when I opened the box, the central (main) stems of all three delphiniums were cracked or broken, and the lower leaves were yellow. There was no support provided to stabilize these taller plants and prevent breakage. The other plant, which is short and squatty, is fine.

I called customer service and they referred me to one of their horticulturists. He was very polite and he did put in a note for them to credit me for the price of the delphiniums on another order of my choice, and there is no expiration date on the credit, so I can use it in the Fall. I was given a reference number for that purpose.

They couldn\'t replace the delphiniums because they were sold out.

That\'s fine, as long as they honor the credit when I get ready to use it.

The horticulturist also advised me to clip off the broken stems and yellow leaves, and to go ahead and plant the delphiniums anyway, as he thought there was a good chance they would recover.

I did, and one of them is starting to put on some new growth, but I\'m still waiting on the other two to do anything.

It\'s a shame, because these had been nice green, healthy plants -- the upper leaves on the broken stems still looked nice. Now they\'ve been set back so far that it might take our entire short growing season for them to progress to where they previously had been. I had my heart set on seeing lovely blue flowers this year on tall, stately stalks.

In the future, I suggest these folks pack their plants more securely and when they confirm the shipping, to get the carrier right.

This is much, much better than the last experience I had with Wayside Gardens, so I\'m giving them a positive rating, because they were polite and helpful this time, and didn\'t ignore my problem.

On May 21st, 2015, flowermaiden2 added the following:

This year's order arrived in much better condition.

As per my previous comment, the horticulturalist I spoke with the last time I ordered delphiniums advised me to go ahead and plant them in spite of broken stems and leaves. I did, and while it took another year or so, they did come back and have bloomed. They're still going strong, two years later, two of them already have flower buds.

The delphiniums with this year's order look much better. I also ordered a yellow Baptista, and got a nice green plant with some size to it, and two Knophia (Red-Hot Poker or Torch Lily). One is huge and the other not so large, but still has several leaves on it.

Everything should do well. I'm keeping the positive rating for Wayside this year.

This has more to do with customer service at the moment as I haven\'t gotten my plants (though from reading these comments I\'m not sure that I will). I have reached out to them several times regarding shipping and tracking see if I could confirm that they are actually preparing to send them. My card has not been charged yet for my plants and I\'m just wanting to make sure that I can properly allocate my funds in my checkbook. Every time I call the service line, I end up with an answering machine on which I have to leave a message that never gets returned. I\'ve sent an email almost 48 hours ago and have not received any response besides an automated one. Hoping I can redeem my view of this company, but from what it seems, they focus on appearances and not customer service.

I've been ordering from Wayside Gardens for ten years and I have only had good experiences. The plants have arrived healthy and well packed. In a few rare instances, the plants did not survive, and replacements were sent without a hassle.

Their prices are higher than some other mailorder plant suppliers, but I feel the price is worth it for the quality I've received. Believe me, I have been burned by other mail order companies.

I have ordered from Wayside for years and for the most part have been pleased with their service; however, I ordered a Baptisia Decadence from them and received it a week ago. It was just a brown stick. I called them and told them I did not want to pay $14.95 for a twig and they said they would replace it. On 9/24/12 they sent me another one and it was worse than the first one. I called them again and said I was not paying $14.95 for two brown sticks. She said they would give me a merchandise credit but that I could not use it until the next day-10/02/12 because the woman that approves this had gone home. Well - I tried to use it today and I could not because the same lady had gone home and the computer said the number of the certificate was not valid. At the moment I am giving them a neutral rating because I am calling them tomorrow-10/3/12-and see if they will honor the merchandise credit they gave me. If not, they will positively get a negative rating.

On October 4th, 2012, clantonnaomi changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following:

I finally got in touch with somebody at Wayside that knew something and they finally got the merchandise credit approved. So, theoretically, they are applying it to another to another purchase. Time will tell.

First of all... getting plants through mail should be a blessing!
If all nurseries stopped shipping plants through mail you all would be PISSED!
Second.... once the plants arrive at your house and are still green and you all put them into the ground, the nursery that shipped it to you is 'not' responsible for those plants. They are not responsible for the type of soil you have, the temperatures you have, the frequency of water, the constant direct sun you have those plants in.

I have ordered from Parks both as a wholesale and retail customer for years. As far as shipping and germination I really dont have a problem, I do however think there are cheaper sources of seed out there. I guess if I had a complaint it would be the foil seed packets. They seem to create a static, and it is very difficult to get the seeds out especially if you want to sow 1/2 now and 1/2 later.

Sorry, This was for Parks not Wayside...But they are one in the same anyway. I did just receive some pretty expensive plants from Wayside. For the price I think there are better mail order choices out there as well, many in the Watchdog Top 30. The plants seem to be OK, one or two are still dormant, so we will see.

I looked all over for a Kerria Japonica shrub and Wayside was the only company I had heard of that had it. I am so pleased with my purchase! The plant arrived in great condition, very well packed in sturdy cardboard, and best of all the bush is about 3' (yes, that's feet, not inches) tall. I can put it straight into the garden instead of nursing it in a pot for a year as you have to with the usual tiny offerings. Less than $20 for a large shrub that is pretty hard to find is a great deal in my opinion. The $10 shipping was well worth it too considering the size and weight of the plant/pot.

I will plant them in an outdoor container next month when it cools

I've previously placed two orders in 2009 with Wayside and all the plants in both orders are doing nicely, despite problems with local critters. (A rabbit ate most of one Scabiosa, but it has rebounded.)

I'm awaiting the Fall shipment of another order -- a hydrangea and 3 more helleborus.

The only thing that keeps me from ordering more from Wayside is their high s&h, which is usually (for me) about a third of the total product prices. This appears to be because Wayside charges s&h by the # of plants while others (like Spring Hill) charge by the order total. I had one order at Wayside where the products came to $26 and the s&h was $13.50.

I didn't place one recent order because on a $40 order, the s&h was going to be nearly $20

Nevertheless, I don't have any complaints with the plants so far.

Then, I planted the shrub roses but could not plant the climbers yet, so they stayed in the bag another week... then in a tub of water an additional week or so... far longer than their recommendation. (I know, neglect to start! We just moved into a new house & lots of prep work was needed.) When I did get to them, they were vigorous and started leafing out immediately...even while in the tub of water! Same with the 4 shrub roses I planted too!
