I have done business with dozens of mailorder tree/shrub companies and Arborvillage is the BEST I have dealt with. Their selection is awesome. Customer service is excellent. Plants are always in excellent condition. I love this place!
I've undertaken a project that will take many, many years to complete, and needed some good sources for the shrub material. ArborVillage was chosen on the basis of their excellent selection, reasonable prices and ratings here. I must say that they are an absolute delight to deal with. Everything I ordered was bigger than I expected, quite healthy, and with one exception, doing exceptionally well. One of the Viburnums I had ordered, while a healthy and vigorous looking plant, failed to break dormancy, which happens sometimes. I called it in last Thursday, and received my substitute plant today. Beautiful plant, healthy, larger than I expected, and doesn't seem to have noticed that it had been sitting in a box in the heat for a couple of days.
They're good people to do business with, and I know that I'll be back for more in the upcoming years.
I placed a phone order a couple of weeks ago and the man I spoke with was very helpful with my questions. I rec'd the order quickly, packed very well. One tree was a little smaller than the others, still plenty big, but when I looked at the invoice, they hadn' even charged for that tree. How many other places would do that? Shipping charges were very reasonable. I was very satisfied with this company and will be ordering more. Thanks
I received my order a few days ago from ArborVillage and I was very, very pleased with both the packing (simply amazing!) and the plants. I had placed my order via the phone a week prior and I was pleased with their attention and service. A very nice gentleman was most helpful and assisted me in finding replacements for some items I had wanted that were sold out. To be honest, I had wanted to order trees from ForestFarm but was put off by the shipping cost. My total shipping cost for 9 trees was $31.80 from Arborvillage.
I am a frequent online as well as regional shopper. I rate this company A+ and will buy from them again soon. Thanks for being what all companies should strive for!
This is my third time ordering from this company. Their plants and shrubs always arrive in wonderful condition and their packaging is the best. Everything that I've ordered has thrived in my northern Illinois climate. Arbor Village excels in customer service.

I received my order yersterday (1-1gal magnolia 'Galaxy' and 1-1gal magnolia sieboldii) in perfect condition. Packaging was great: both pots securely wrapped in plastic and bound with rubber bands-no soil spillage, both tied at opposite ends of the generous sized box securely with twine-product could not move around in the box at all. Price was excellent(nearly half what other companies were asking for same size and varieties). Definitely will order again!

I haven't yet placed an order with this company, but for the kindness they've already shown me, I will order from them this spring.
For some reason I couldn"t download their catalog. I emailed them and after offering assistance, they sent me a catalog in the mail. I didn't realize at the time that they charge for that catalog, and they sent it to me free.
Also, they grow almost everything I've ever heard of, and then some. I will post more after I order, but I'm sure that with the great comments noted on this site, I know I will be pleased with their plants!

I placed my order with Derrick and received it today. I appreciate his patience with my form of payment, and his email communication was awesome.
The trees were wrapped in their own soil in their own little plastic baggies all held together with rubber bands, tied in the shipping box with twine. The soil was moist and the trees are healthy and ready for spring! The Pterostyrax even has little leaves on it!
I read the catalog almost daily and must have 50 or more trees circled, and I can't wait to order again!
Thanks, Derrick, and ArborVillage...I will recommend this company to anyone and everyone!

Great source of woody plants, especially the odd and wonderful! Their packaging is truly the very best of all the mail order nurseries I have used. Plants are larger than advertised. I'd agree that some of the root systems will take a bit of work to get them "untangled", but the plants don't seem to skip a beat. Good quality stock sold by honest and friendly plantsmen.
Incredible selection of hardy woody plants for the collector. Plants are generally quite reasonably priced, and the packaging (for shipment) is among the best I've seen. I would recommend them without reservation.
100% positive, the people are friendly and take their time talking with you about what would be the best choice for your garden! they are not just into selling you a plant for the sake of a sale. over the past year now i have struck up quite a friendship over the phone with lanny and really appreciate all the hard work they do over there along with their recommendations. wish i lived near their nursery instead of 12 hours away! pastor mark
I attended the Arborvillage open house two weeks ago, driving five hours (one way) to do so. It was worth every minute of my time. The Rawdons (owners of Arborvillage) are every bit as nice in person as they are on the phone. At the open house they had additional family and friends helping out, adding to an already warm and friendly atmosphere. I even received a free 'Atropurpureum' Japanese maple -- what a deal! (Thank you Derrick.) Regarding the plants, I heartily concur with all the positive comments below. Many of my Arborvillage plants from previous orders have thrived; those that have died have usually fallen victim to yet another bout of wacky Nebraska weather before they could get established. (Such is gardening life in this climate.) If you are a Midwest gardener, Arborvillage should be near the top of your list as a source of woody plants. It's a first-rate operation.
I order from this company every year. You will get plants larger than you expect, packed better than you could imagine. The catalogue is small, but every plant is highly desirable; it's not loaded up with poplars and willows and Norway maples. If you like Forest Farm, you will appreciate the narrower focus and better shipping rates offered here.

This is a friendly, family run business I have ordered from for several years. I highly recommend this nursery to anyone interested in trees or shrubs. The plant selection, quality, delivery and service are great. The trees and shrubs always arrive in beautiful condition ( the packaging is the best I have ever seen),and any problems I had were quickly addressed directly by the owner or his son.
I agree with all the previous comments about ArborVillage, except for saying that the plants are root-bound (never on mine) and that the selection is not large. My lord, how many places (except ForestFarm) come even close to the dazzling breadth of the deciduous tree species, hybrids and cultivars offered here? You want an oak that's neither pin nor red? You have 26 species to choose from. Also 70 crabapples, 15 lindens, 8 different cultivars of sweet gum including the one that does not produce sticker-balls ('Rotundiloba'), 48 species of maple and triple that the number of maple cultivars, 11 cultivars of lace-bark elm, including the beautiful one with golden leaves I bought last year and on and on.At this place are trees of exotic perfection: Pterocarya fraxinifolia, Stewartia sinensis and Acer tegmentosum 'White Tigress'. Also trees of profound utility: Maclura pomifera 'White Shield', Corylus colurna and Tilia petiolaris 'Chelsea Sentinal'. Those wanting to go "native" can have a field day here with such national treasures as Sassafras albidum, Diospyros virginiana, Carpinus caroliniana, Celtis laevigata and the very choice and very tough Rhus glabra 'Laciniata'. (The East Coast bias is mine, not theirs.) I've ordered from ArborVillage every year for the past 10 years. The plants are wonderful, the packing is poetry and they've never screwed up my order (though understandably, some things were 'sold out' on occasion). The people running the place are skilled, intelligent, dedicated, reliable and sweet. They also sell shrubs and conifers. I regularly use some other great nurseries, but because ArborVillage is so exceptional in every area, I consider it the best mail-order nursery in the United States.
I order from ArborVillage at least once, sometimes twice a year. These comments apply to every plant in every order thus far. Plants are generally bigger than advertised, in fine condition, and laced into their packing box so well they would likely be unharmed if booted all the way from Missouri to Maine along backroads by a sullen teenager. I have an even longer relationship with Forestfarm and will continue to buy from them, but ArborVillage has a saner system of figuring shipping costs, the plants tend to be larger, I think, and where Forestfarm will send a small plant in a paper tube, ArborVillage is likely to use a quart pot. They don't have a huge selection, but it's ample and contains many choice cultivars. If you can't find hundreds of dollars worth of trees you "must have" from this place each year, get out of the gardening game!
I order a lot from different nurseries around the country. ArborVillage has a great selection of trees and shrubs, and when they arrive at my door, they are in wonderful condition. The real plus is the handwritten comments on the packing list. I am made to feel like I'm their #1 customer!
I've ordered from ArborVillage several times and the plants have always been in great condition. I've ordered twice a year for the past 3 years and never had a problem. Prices are very good, stock is excellent, and selection is incredible!
After being enticed by their offerings for years I finally sent in a small order. The next shipping season came and went. No canceled check, no plants so I called them on the phone. They had forgotten about it! They've sent trees to somebody else out my way a few times. I've noticed a tendency for them to be underpotted and rootbound.
I have purchased from ArborVillage numerous times over the past six years and have always received stock in top condition. I had a problem with one tree which I purchased in the Spring, it was not budding out, and to my surprise I received a post card from ArborVillage asking if I was having problems with that species. Apparently, there was a very severe winter in the Midwest and that species was showing severe winter damage in the nursery. They contacted me first and asked if I would like a replacement, if mine was not doing well. I accepted, and again to my surprise they shipped it overnight express. The cost of shipping to them exceeded the cost of the tree. That's what I call good customer service. You cannot go wrong buying from this company!
Although less than a hundred pages, ArborVillage's catalog is packed with many unusual cultivars of shrubs, trees and conifers, including extensive listings of Dogwoods, Magnolias, Maples and Viburnums. Each plant listing includes hardiness zones, expected size in 5 yrs., and the approximate size of the plant at shipment. I have ordered from the company for three years and have always been well pleased. The plants are well grown, larger than specified and packed very well. The customer service is excellent, in fact, I had to convince them not to send me a replacement for a Japanese Maple that I killed! It's a great company, and I'm wondering now if I should have given away my little treasure.
I have been dealing with this company for years and have never been disappointed. It is a family run operation carrying a wide variety of common and unusual trees and shrubs. Their catalog carries informative descriptions, but no pictures.
