Rhodophiala bifida red (3 blooming sized bulbs) $17.99

Oxblood lilies (or Hurricane lilies or Schoolhouse lilies) are considered an heirloom bulb in Texas because it was first brought here from Argentina by German settlers in the 1800's. It is easy to grow and is Texas tough-as-nails; easily enduring droughts and deluges in our gardens where it has grown for over 20 years. The red form is the most classic. The long-necked black coated bulbs grow deeply; and if planted shallowly, they will pull themselves down to their chosen level by contractile roots. This tends to make digging labor intensive! They are mostly hysteranthus (that means flowering before the leaves appear) and therefore flower on naked stems usually early September (within a week of labor day for us) after a rain. Ours are blood red and somewhat resemble a miniature Amaryllis with 3-4 blooms per scape; but with dark green, narrow foliage during the fall (after flowering), winter, and spring. They prefer full sun or deciduous shade during their growing season and are completely dormant for us by the end of May. The height of the flower scape is about 12"-14". They never require dividing and are very rapid reproducers. Good for growing in zones 7-10.

We are bulb growers, not brokers, and the second picture below is a good average representation of the size of the bulbs you will be receiving. All have well developed root systems still intact. They will transition into your garden splendidly. They are dormant now, but will begin blooming around Labor day and the foliage grows throughout the winter and goes dormant again in late spring depending on your zone and climatic conditions. We sell only blooming sized bulbs!

Detailed planting and growing instructions are included with all our bulb and seed orders.

We ship bulbs to the continental United States only—and shipping for the first 3 red Rhodophiala bifida bulbs is $5.99 USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation included at no extra charge for the first 3 bulbs. Additional groups of bulbs of this species or any other bulbs we are offering can be included for a flat $1.99 additional shipping charge for an unlimited number of bulbs from the auction site. Orders can be combined and our seeds can ride along on bulb orders for free!
