Propagation difficulties, and slower growth than say 'Red Maple' makes them a bit more expensive, but don't settle for a quick cheap fix. Select quality. This is perhaps our favorite medium large landscape tree. Exquisite peeling coppery bark, that if one is giving to taking winter walks stands out in the landscape. Leaf shows good scarlet-orange fall color.

This tree should not be overlooked in the rush of A.rubrum 'Cultivars'. Its amber-red fall color creates a magnificent effect, similar to a glowing log fire, and earlier than others, when you are still enjoying the outside.Not forgetting that this is the prime source of Maple syrup. If you drive around the park, you will often see cars parked dangerously, their occupants running across a field camera in hand; after spotting a tree. This is the tree that occasioned for me the crazy park fever described above. A young specimen displaying tight curling bark similar to River Birch. With age the bark will become grayer and more plated but still handsome. Fall leaf color is similar to 'Sugar Maple'.
