Aesulus x carnea, 'Briotii', Z4,5,6,7, DR
Mature height - 30'x30', Growth - Med., Light - S-Psh, Soil
- Med.., Origin - Hybrid
Flower Color - pinkish-red, Flower Time - May
As a boy in England on the way to the school in
season, picking up, and playing a game of 'conkers'; was a popular past time. The
seed of the European Horsechestnut (Buckeye), A.hippocastanum, was skewered and
threaded on string, whence you would bash or have your 'conker' bashed, by
whoever you played against, until; only one was left. 'Briotii' is a cross between
the 'conker' tree of my youth, and A.pavia, described below. Whilst a lot of
native buckeyes are prone to fungal diseases this one seems to escape. Makes a
lovely open grown specimen where space permits. The leaves are somewhat coarse
in texture but the 5 leaflets give tropical feel. In flower the tree commands
attention.
Looking up, growing in the shade.
Aesculus pavia, RED BUCKEYE, Z 4,5,6,7,8, DR
Mature height - 15'x10', Growth - Slow, Light - S-Psh-Sh,

If you are a 'hot gardener', nothing compares to these vibrant red foxglove like Spring flowers.
Best in part shade moist environment where leaves will stay scorch free. Leaf
provides attractive tropical feel but drops early. Small enough to fit into
garden.
On its own.
Asimina triloba, PAW PAW, Z 5,6,7,8, DR
Mature height - 15'x10', Growth - Slow, Light - S-Psh-Sh,

Often called the 'Appalachian banana' in these parts, the
fruit is either highly esteemed or disgusts. We find it pleasant and a joy to
collect on a late summer walk. When brought out from the forest under
story provides interesting flower, large leaf that often shows good yellow fall
color.
Flower Color - green-purple, Flower Time - May, Fall Color

Nodding flower.
Edible flower.
Betula nigra, 'Heritage', Z 4,5,6,7,8, DR/Bark
Mature height - 50'x20', Growth - Fast, Light - S, Soil -
Med.-Wet, Origin - Eastern US
Fall Color - yellow
Probably Birches are the starting point for peoples
appreciation of bark on tree. To the fore in winter, birches contrast well with
red brick, evergreens and mix well with red twig dogwoods and willows. The pure
white birches are more susceptible to disease in our hot and humid summers and
are more suited to the cooler North. River Birch has proven resistant to Birch
Borer. Seed grown River Birch are hit and miss for bark display, this one will
not disappoint. 'Heritage' is an outstanding selection with standout
white-salmon peeling bark, with sometimes good yellow fall color.
Whilst in the wild it is often seen with wet feet, has proven very adaptable, in
cultivation. In 2002 was named Urban Tree of the Year by the Society of
Municipal Arborists.
Starting point for bark lovers.
Castanea Mollisma, CHINESE CHESTNUT , Z4,5,6,7,8,
Nuts
Mature height - 40'X40', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil -
Med.., Origin - Japan, Korea
Flower Color - yellow catkins, Flower Time - June, Fall
Color - yellow-bronze
Valued for its nuts that make fine eating toasted in an
oven or appreciated by wild life. Will be messy if planted over tarmac, better
sited in the larger landscape with grass underneath. Makes a fine ornamental
with pointy serrated shiny green leaves, magnificent with its tasseled long
flower, spiny nut shells are attractive on plant and sometimes good Fall color.
If you have the space well worth planting, usually takes 2 to tango.
Spiky chestnuts.
Carpinis Betulus, EUROPEAN HORNBEAM, Z5,6,7,
Mature height - 40'X30', Growth - Slow-Med., Light - S-Psh,
Soil - Med.., Origin - Europe
Fall Color - yellow
A fine tree in its own right, but often used for
hedging. Slower growth means clipping once a year, leaves hang on most of winter.
Cercidiphyllum japonicum, KATSURA TREE, Z 4,5,6,7,8,
DR/Bark/Bonzai
Mature height - 50'x25', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil -
Med., Origin - China, Japan
Fall Color - apricot
The leaves have it all on this one. Blue-green heart shaped
with apricot fall color. Sweet smelling, perhaps burnt sugar fragrance. Shaggy
bark in maturity as well.
Chionanthus virginicus, FRINGE TREE, Z 4,5,6,7,8,
Mature height - 20'x10', Growth - Slow, Light - S-Psh, Soil

Stands out in flower in the void between Spring and Summer.
Very handsome white flowers backed up by shiny dark green leaves. Adaptable to
light and soil, a fine classy native.

Cotinus coggygria, 'Atropurpurea', Z 5,6,7,8, DR/Cut
Mature height - 12'x12', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil -
Dry-Med., Origin - China, Europe
Flower Color - cloudy, Flower Time - June, Fall Color -
orange
Even those these our grown from seed we assure you of vibrant purple-burgundy leaves holding into summer.
Some dulling will occur in leaves in heat of summer, then leaves darken with
sometimes orange fall color. Nothing else give you quite the billowing cloudlike flower
display. The deer don't seem to care for it either.
Nursery plant in flower.
Crateagus phaenopyrum, WASHINGTON HAWTHORN, Z
4,5,6,7,8, DR/Berries
Mature height - 25'X20', Growth - Med., Light - S, Soil -
Med., Origin - SE US
Flower Color - white, Flower Time - May, Fall Color -
orange-scarlet
Don't plant it where you might impale yourself on an inch
long thorn or fruit will spoil sidewalk or driveway. Apart from those
few caveats this is a fine tree at all times of the year. White June flower
display, maple like leaf that often shows good scarlet fall color. Fruit is
glossy red in October and persists into winter.
