Acacia
caffra
“Cat Thorn”
A stately & beautiful tree or shrub tolerant of a wide variety
of conditions. As a tree it can quickly reach 20’ tall with a
spreading crown & looks elegant surrounded by a lawn. If pruned
or kept in a container it remains a shrub to about 5’ tall &
4’ spread. Blooming in March, April or May, the sweetly scented,
creamy white flower spikes are large & conspicuous & are lovely
against the soft, fresh green foliage. The trunk grows quite crooked,
giving the tree true character & the wood is dense, hard & beautifully
grained. It does have a large root system & so is not suitable as
a street tree. Considered a lucky tree by traditional African beliefs.
Frost & drought tolerant.
