Hose BibsFINALLY got some pipe laid and put in some hose bibs… can't believe it took me this long. Took a leak and emergency repair of live pipe and no water for nearly 3 full days to get the prompting to get it done… still no where near done, but a huge dent made… new bibs in dog yard (two, on either side), one in greenhouse, and one out front (coming from the greenhouse) on outside of cat structure… yay.

Second Planter box 'done'Except for the details of planting it, putting in rocks and adding some sort of mulch... Left my cycad in the middle of it in its own brick planter, that sort of got buried a bit. Back of planter is just the redwood fencing, which is not likely to last too long.. but plan to put a corresponding planter box on the other side of the fence... should keep things a tad more stable.

Greenhouse insulationby FAR an imperfect job so far... but functional I think. No idea what sort of insulation I should be putting in a greenhouse, but just got some R 13 and stapled it up on the plywood and put more plywood over it... wish it were a water tight seal, but it's not... yet... can get some foam insulation and seal the cracks I hope. But got the north wall insulated, making a hole for the cat door and dealing with existing shelving... plywood is heavy and unwieldy stuff... do not envy people who have to deal with it all the time. North wall should be easier... since most of it is a door and there is no shelving to work around. But that is for another day (dark now).
Finished (pretty much) the greenhouse insluation project... left a few rectangles uninsulated because they were small and I want to eventually put a grate there (one is low so that one is not likely to be a heat sink- the other I may get some stiff, styrofoam insulation to stuff up there temporarily). Put up multiple shelves, thinking I was overdoing the shelving thing... but still had almost no room for everything i wanted to put in there... pretty crammed.

Second Planter boxGot wood and concrete for second planter box... hope to get started on that in a few days so Tammy can help... she is aching for this new planter.. .we have a lot of plants sitting around waiting to be planted... maybe not the best time of year to plant things- going into the dead of winter. I know it gets really cold here... but that is relative... this is still Southern California, so we are still in the habit of planting any dang time of year we feel like it.... we may learn otherwise this time around.
Put in wood Tuesday, December 3rd... Dirt delivered today, Wednesday, but too busy insulating greenhouse... was cold last night and likely colder tonight... Only plant I left out that will probably die is large Aloe vambelenii... just can't haul it far enough to safety... sigh. Too heavy.

Hardscape Projects for 2013 and beyond1) coyote proof the back yard, including finishing fence, deep underground concrete, new gates and overhanging wire- done (all by me except overhanging wire fencing)
2} Cat enclosure- done
3) Bird net the back yard- done
4) Ramp to spare bedroom- done (by someone else and costly!!)
5) Doggie deck outside of bedroom with doggie door- done (by someone else and also pricey)
6) Cat door into greenhouse- done, but not well
7) Redo stairs to back yard, add on small deck and make redwood pathway to garage- done (this is my greatest building accomplishment to date).
8) Planter box in back- done
9) treat the new deck and stairs- done
10) Second planter box in back- done 12-13
11) third planter box outside dog yard basically mimicking the second one, just on the other side of the fence... this on for cycads and a few succulents which need/like to sit in hot sun and need a wind break... premium growing spot really - done 3-14
>Fence in backyard and front deck- done... sort of... we decided NOT to fence in the front deck... but got the entire back yard top level fenced in along with 5 gates.
>Erect the carport I ordered and received 3 months ago- gave up on this...
10) insulate greenhouse- Done early December 2013
11) build structures in greenhouse to set plants on- Done early December 2013
>Put in more shade cloth in greenhouse-
>Shade cloth the back yard-
>Dig trenches and put in water lines for new hose bib locations:
---- Front yard
--Cactus garden (west end)
>Set up everything on drip
>Get an automated sprinkler system and attempt to figure out how to use it
>Make back yard (dog area) cat proof so Mr Smith can't get out like Black Kitty did
>Cut vent line to office vent (that is no longer there)- this will have to be outsourced. Decided this was unnecessary, so will never get done
>Make shade area by modifying pergola over hot tub
>brick in entire front yard/lawn area (bit by bit, probably)- changed my mind- weed area extensively, level, apply weed cloth and cover with decorative rock (way cheaper)
>Finish rocking in the cactus garden
>Make solid, long term pathways down west and south hills with available railroad ties- turns out don't have near enough rail road ties... will need to buy more someday.
>Maybe do same to east hillside... someday
>Create planter boxes on small eastern hill under driveway and south of drive
>Rake out the ridges in the driveway
>Make small shade/winterizing area out of doggie deck (no longer used by dogs)- this plan nixed by Tammy
> Planter boxes on south slope, and maybe East slope, for future planting of sensitive species
> move all extra wood to storage shed (so not messing up yard and driveway)- done 3-14
> fix the mess underneath the house I made trying to see the duct system
> New door for hot water heater (last one fell off in summer 2013)- done 5-14
> build a simple 'stall' for trash cans so they don't keep blowing over
> build a planter box outside dog yard to stabilize the one it is... maybe outside of both areas... half done 3-14; finished 5-14
> House the pump so that it doesn't overheat in hot sun, or freeze in winter- shade part done 6-14

Planting projects>Create a cactus garden- 60% done by now, but will be a never ending job
> Create a columnar cactus garden- about 20% complete... have a lot of natives to dig up and remove, too
> Create an Agave garden- 30% done, but have a long ways to go
> Create a pine and Eucalyptus 'forest' on the south hill for both wind protection and shade for future planting- about 5% done so far... have a LOT more Eucalyptus and some pines to go. Have a few oaks... may get more
> keep natives weeded off eastern slope
> Create and Aloe garden once maybe some planter boxes have been created and there is some shade/frost protection in place south slope
> Plant cycads and palms around hot tub area
> consider a row of oleander as wind barrier just below top of south hillside.
> remove variegated tree and move apple tree to elsewhere south side, and plant to large-as-possible pepper trees.
> plant more pepper trees along eastern rim of top garden
> Plant more bottle brushes there, too
> Find a good choice (hopefully a palm or two) for top of western driveway- remove southern Phoenix and plant Phoenix dactylifera instead... if that one croaks, try Brahea armatas instead
> plant eucalyptus or other large trees in front of storage container and water tank.
> eventually cover all lowest slopes with Opuntia gardens ( for human passage control), and possible Agave Americana walls... or cooler still, walls of columnar species (Oreocereus?)
