Scoutneeded something to do (lost my job)... turned out OK, though
Thursday, February 15, 2007Garth, one of my girlfriend's favorite dogs.. eyes are almost human
Friday, December 8, 2006another golden retriever painting... if I keep this up, I will someday actually learn how to paint long dog hair.
Saturday, November 18, 2006Decided to forget the date thing.. just do 'real time'. Anyway, here is one of my latest two watercolor paintings... same dog, different papers... this one sucks for watercolor... too thick and unforgiving. Sucks up the paint instantly and makes blending difficult. Same paper as used on the two french bulldogs below.
Saturday, November 18, 2006this, however, is regular 300lb cold press, and blending was no problem.
Friday, January 28, 2005another French Bulldog, for someone who works with me at the Amanda Foundation- it's her dog. Done on that super absorbent paper... I will have to stop using it.. too hard to paint on.
Thursday, January 27, 2005Here is Sam, or 'freebie' grey, who was given to us by a nice couple that couldn't keep her... this bird is in love with its chain, but is pretty docile and nice to us, too... though a bit nippy at times. Here she sits in the garden.
Tuesday, January 25, 2005Here are some of my girl friend's favorite things she got this year. It's her birthday, though she already had these items by then...
Monday, January 24, 2005This is Spike, again, painted on a new kind of paper to me... something that is super thick, and absorbs paint instantly... it was a challenge to paint on it, and I think I will try to avoid that paper in the future... Finished 7-06
Sunday, January 23, 2005This is a painting of a french bulldog belonging to another doctor I work with... part of a business card design I was working on... did it on really thick, highly absorbent paper that I am not used to working with... very unforgiving... particularly this time of year with low humidity and over 100 temps. Complete 7-06
Saturday, January 22, 2005This scene is from over a month ago, and sadly, Myrna (on the left) is at her new home in Texas... she was my favorite puppy. We still have the other two, and looks like they're both staying... oh well. Finished May 06
Thursday, January 20, 2005Here is Jack, a AManda Foundation dog, resting from the activity of looking for a new home.
Wednesday, January 19, 2005Dave all grown up (nearly a year old) hanging out on the patio.. finished 3-06
Tuesday, January 18, 2005This is Cinder (Cinderella)- a rescue dog we took in sort of reluctlanly expecting to find a home for her. She was disgustingly infested with mange and so scabby she oozed from everywhere... She also had the largest overbite I have ever seen in a dog (as an adult you can put most of your hand in her mouth without her having to open it). But she grew up to have sleek coat and great personality (overbite never got better, but she manages). Even though she's almost 50 lbs, she's only about 15" tall. Dumbest dog I've ever known... but great dog!
Monday, January 17, 2005This is Nala and Gia, the grandmother and mother of the puppies we have been raising, sleeping on our couch.
Monday, January 17, 2005This is Chocolate Boy, the best looking puppy of the bunch (though looked terrified a lot)... He is at his new home now and happy. Painting completed 2-06
Sunday, January 16, 2005Here's a shot of the puppies at 7 weeks (from photo you can see in the Ramblings)... Finished 2-06
Saturday, January 15, 2005Chihuahua painting I did last week (2006) for friend... looks sort of cartoony, but they liked it.
Friday, January 14, 2005This is Bart, who belongs to my new boss.. he's pretty sick... and old, but a really sweet dog. Painting a Christmas gift for her. Done just before X-mas 2005.
Thursday, January 13, 2005This is a tribute to a client's dog who he loved dearly and dragged us all into his life in the process.. very nice guy and pet was nice too... hate to see passages like that go unnoticed, so here is something to remind me of it. Every evening when it was our turn (had a lot of help doing this) we would walk up their rose lined path to the house to give Oliver his fluids, and we would hear about his day. Unfortunately he had cancer and only had a short time to live, but the owner seemed to make the most of it for the both of them.
Wednesday, January 12, 2005Phoebe, the anxious poodle.. Has to get groomed professionally now and then, but I like her in her 'natural' state... here she is all shaggy and happy. Finished 8-05
Tuesday, January 11, 2005This is Dave, of OUR Garden (Still Dave's garden). This is how he looked at 10 weeks of age... He's more dachshundy looking now
Monday, January 10, 2005Peach. This is our one dog that is not really that psychotic. She is pretty much trouble free- doesn't whine or bark much, doesn't pick fights, doesn't poop in the house... and medically in excellent condition.
6 months later- this painting somehow got within reach of the dogs and they ate it. Oh well.. .glad I at least have a copy here.
Sunday, January 9, 2005THis is a pair of chihuahuas I saw at a dog get together near Los Angeles. June 2005
Sunday, January 9, 2005This is Sophie, a dog belonging to my head technician (who I will miss after this week is over (end of June 2005)). Nice dog... good poser.
Saturday, January 8, 2005another shot of Ernie, this one with sunglasses (he was squinting in the photo I painted this from, and felt he needed some relief from the sun).
Friday, January 7, 2005This is Cinder all grown up, overbite and all... weird dog. Finished June 13, 2005
Thursday, January 6, 2005Here's one of my client's little dogs- have done one other watercolor of the same dog, but I liked this view a lot, too
Wednesday, January 5, 2005Here is the latest portrait I did (yesterday) of two Bedlington Terriers that belong to a client of mine. She asked for this to be done after seeing one I did of the male on my own.
Wednesday, January 5, 2005This is the male I did a few weeks ago and 'hung' (really have no $$ for framing, so just sat the paper on a shelf) in front office for all to see.
Wednesday, January 5, 2005This is a little Boston puppy I liked, so I photographed her and painted her. Owners loved the painting, but didn't want to buy it... so I still have it (gotta keep SOME art to show others).
Wednesday, January 5, 2005This is Scout- the most precious thing on the planet to my girlfriend... she's about 3 lbs and is full adult (4 years old)... very bitchy little dog, but really cute and has lots of personality. Here she's outdoors squinting in the sun at the Nuts for Mutts thing.
Wednesday, January 5, 2005This is another shot of the little chiuhahau above painted in green...
Tuesday, January 4, 2005Here's some Akitas I photographed at a pet demo/show/ whatever that Kim Basinger put on here in Los Angeles (called Nuts for mutts- celebrating the mutt... Akitas are not mutts, but I guess all dogs were allowed to attend).
Tuesday, January 4, 2005This is Bruin, one of the nicest male rottweilers I have ever met, and one of my more successful patients... at least so far. I diagnosed him with Lymphoma last end of summer, and the owners wanted me to do the chemo (usually send those to a specialist)... so I tried it out, and he's still with us today (gave him a chemo injection yesterday)... and he finally made it past the median treatment age- yahoo! Doubt he will make it a full year, but you never know.
Turns out, while I was on vacation, the boss gave the owner this painting... oh well... guess she is going to enjoy it more than I will
Bruin passed away end of June 05. Will always remember that dog- one of the nicest male rottweilers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Got a year almost with his chemo. Owners think it was worth it. Got a free painting, too...
Tuesday, January 4, 2005Of course, last but not least, are our own animals. This is a large potrait of them (about 30" x 40")... This is before I added on the all black background (probably a mistake).
Monday, January 3, 2005This dog is one of the cutest and most photogenic dogs I have tried to paint... he belongs to one of our clients that seems to have an endless number of dogs, yet still somehow manages to take good care of all of them. Made two different paintings of this little girl- but this is the better of them. Finished March 2005
Monday, January 3, 2005This is another chihuahua cross from the same owner, done during my wildest color-nuts phase (I think that was Novermber 04).
Monday, January 3, 2005These next three paintings also belong to this same client- this was my very first portrait I did- I didn't do it to sell it, but she bought it anyway.
Monday, January 3, 2005Here's my attempt at being more 'artsy fartsy'.. worked OK, but difficult to find frames to fit this shape of painting.
Monday, January 3, 2005This is one of the few cats I've done... again, same owner. I had another great cat painting, but gave it away before getting a chance to photograph it for my files (dumb!). Cat's are much less photogenic, especially if you like to paint animals with sunlight on them (most cats will take off in the parking lot- doesn't make for good client relations then).
Sunday, January 2, 2004Here's my first real portrait for hire... just 6 months ago. Dog on right has been dead for years... and one on left is still hanging in there. So I had to put them in the same painting so they looked like they were both still with us. Turned out OK... not the best... and colors are a bit wild.
Sunday, January 2, 2004This is Lucci... another cancer patient of mine, but not so lucky as Bruin. Lucci died a few months ago, and I did this painting of him while he was ill, which is too bad, since he was full of SO much energy just months before and would have made a lot better subject. One of the nicest dogs you could ever meet, but frustratingly loud and energetic. But not near the end. Owners loved the painting so much, I just gave it to them (rats, where is that killer instinct for the sale??!).
Sunday, January 2, 2004Here's a painting of our real estate agent's dog... actually looks a lot like the dog, but a bit scared... I think at the time I took the original photograph, it was a bit scared.
Thursday, January 8, 2004Here's my first attempt at painting on a rock... sort of used the help of a book on the subject, so if it looks like that person's hippo, that's why... but now that I'm getting the hang of that, will try more of my own rock-art (completed Sept 05)
Wednesday, January 7, 2004This is 'Scouty' Finch, named after our dog... this was a little bird my girl friend was feeding when we were in Hawaii, and she was missing her favorite little puppy Scout (see watercolor pets)... so she named this one Scouty. This painting was done in June 2005- on canvas about 3' wide...acrylic.
Tuesday, January 6, 2004This is one of my latest paintings (finished early June 2005, even though listed here, for organizational purposes, as being done in May)... giraffe studies... mostly to help me hone the newer skills of acrylic painting.. still have a lot to learn but slowly getting better.
Tuesday, January 6, 2004This is another shot of the girraffe acrylic... showing that the painting continues on the sides of the canvas... so no need for framing (a real problem for most of my work as I never seem to have the $$ or effort to frame anything, so nothing ever gets hung).
Monday, January 5, 2004This is an acrylic I tried to do monochromatically of Bruin, the chemo rottweiler I also did in watercolors (see above). Done May 2005
Sunday, January 4, 2004This is one of my first attempt at acrylics... used a black gesso background . These are our own poodles.
Sunday, January 4, 2004THese are the same two poodles, but in cartoon mode, with some wild colors and extra texture for gesso. May 2005
Saturday, January 3, 2004These are a trio of Celebes macaques I helped feed and take care of when i worked briefly at the National Zoo many many many years ago (pre vetschool days). This was a pastel done back in the mid 1990s.
Saturday, January 3, 2004Manatees I saw in Florida (Crystal river) back during a veterinary conference out there in Orlando- done 1994
Saturday, January 3, 2004This is my own dog (gone now)... Murphy... I still had a ways to go in capturing animals, then, and may still - this was done about 1996
Saturday, January 3, 2004Colored pencil of Chamaeleon and fly... can't recall what the plants were... did this one on commision- 1992
Friday, January 2, 2004Not really an animal painting... more of a fake animal pencil drawing (colored pencil)... can't remember why I did it... for a class I think- about 1993
Friday, January 2, 2004This is large pastel I sold many years ago... about 5' x 3.5'... framed it in glass and it weighed a ton. Finished 1992
Friday, January 2, 2004Love lizards... not sure why I don't do more lizard art. This is skink and spheres pastel... actually won an award in New Mexico state fair... and sold same day. Done in early 1990s
Thursday, January 1, 2004This is a joke pastel I did... but folks like it... I tried to make it corny. 1993
Thursday, January 1, 2004This is compilation of reptiles... you can hang in any direction you like and it's always up side up... or upside down I guess- 1992
Wednesday, December 31, 2004
Nonwatercolor animalsMost of these are pastels, but as I get working on it, the shift may gradually become mostly acrylics... and maybe, someday, if I get up the nerve, I may try watercolors, too. Most of these, except the acrylic paintings, were done years ago.
Wednesday, January 22, 2003Finally did another painting of an wild animal... been over a year or two... yikes. Forgot how satisfying it could be.
Tuesday, January 21, 2003The person I gave the painting to used it to raise money to help save the White Rhino... here is the T-shirt they made to sell for such a purpose. Turned out pretty nice
Wednesday, January 8, 2003This is one of my attempts at a real 'illustration'... just took an antelope and put it out into space Aug 05
Tuesday, January 7, 2003Rhino we fed at Wild Animal Park in San Diego... this one is 'smelling' us (doing something called flamen). Painting reflects the stark light that is going on this week with the blazing heat (mid July 2005).
Monday, January 6, 2003This zebra was a young animal I saw at the zoo in Singapore. They had a really large zebra population there- can't remember what species of zebra, though. Done on a shift at the emergency clinic, July 2005
Sunday, January 5, 2003lastest animal painting: Hippos... still working on the background shading, but from far away even looks a tad like a photograph. This one finished June 11, 2005
Saturday, January 4, 2003Polar bear at the zoo... but I didn't replicate the zoo surroundings so much so he looks more like he could be in nature. Completed June 05
Saturday, January 4, 2003This is my latest (finished yesterday, June 3rd, 2005) of an elephant- one of my favorite subjects- have such interesting shapes and textures.
Friday, January 3, 2003This is a sloppy painting I started a year ago (2004), and then forgot about... and finished up a month ago... Still, ended up looking OK from far away, despite the lack of effort. Finished April 2005
Friday, January 3, 2003This is a baby orang we saw in Bornea when we went a few years ago. Painted March 2005
Friday, January 3, 2003Rhino and kids, from the Wild Animal park rhinos, San Diego county. We took a special tour that got us a bit closer to the animals, so I could get some better photos. Feb 2005
Thursday, January 2, 2003One of several watercolor giraffe pieces (have several not shown in this diary, too). 2004
Thursday, January 2, 2003Another one of my favorite animal subjects to paint/draw: tigers 2004
Wednesday, January 1, 2003Couple stylized crowned cranes I saw in Orlando, at Busch GArdens
Wednesday, January 1, 2003This was a llama at the zoo in Orlando that didn't like me, for some reason. EVerytime I got near it, it's ears went back.. So it's my pissed off Llama watercolor 2004
Wednesday, January 1, 2003This was a miniature hippo (still huge) at the zoo in Tampa I think... but not sure.. may have been in Tampa. Feb 2005
Wednesday, January 1, 2003This was originally a pencil drawing, which I had prints made of about 20 years ago... and then decided to watercolor recently- turned out great
Wednesday, January 1, 2003This was an attempt at wild color, but it didn't work... not everything works out... sigh 2004
Wednesday, January 1, 2003OK so this is mostly a still life, but it has animals in it. This is an older watercolor for a class back in 1993
Tuesday, December 31, 2003
Nonpet watercolor animalsThese are mostly zoo animals, or others that I have painted, that are NOT someone's pets.
Thursday, June 13, 2002
Animal artwork by meThis section will be a large grouping of the animal-related artwork I have done over the last few years (along with a few older things). It is organized by date, for purposes of organization only... the dates on the paintings have nothing to do with when they were done. But that's the only way I can figure out how to organize things in this 'diary' so that they come out in the order I like to look at them. So I have one category of paintings done in one year, one in another etc., to keep them from getting mixed up. The more recent paintings/drawings in each section will be listed later in that year so that the most recent stuff will be first under each heading. For those reading this far, you must be bored by now, so go look at some art!
