The bridge deck should be fine, as it is over 5" thick and will retain some of its moisture.The humidity is high and we are expecting more rain tomorrow, Cement hydration is a chemical reaction that requires water for the cement in the concrete to continue to gain strength. If people let their concrete dry out, they are wasting as much as a third of its potential strength. The first week is the most important, as the concrete reaches about 2/3 to 3/4 of its strength in that time. In the old days contractors used to keep concrete wet for a week. That was a good practice, but labor intensive. Nowadays they put a "curing compound" barrier film (usually sprayed on after the final finishing) on that prevents escape of the moisture from the concrete. Knowing it was expected to rain, I didn't want to do that with the bridge deck. Concrete technology "lesson of th day."
