I stopped at a restaurant this spring and outside were two huge baskets filled with free dahlia bulbs. Unfortunately no information was attached. Any help would be appreciated.

Answered my own question! It's Arabian Night
It fooled me because mine is darker but the closer I look at your photo the more I can see it is Arabian Night.
That is a gorgeous dahlia. Looks a lot like the one I have as a tattoo. I just love the dark red ones!
pirl, it appears that you've answered a question as to the identity of this dahlia. It was labeled "Witteman's" but looks pretty much like yours. Dan
