SOLVED: A Pretty Blue stranger ? Try # II

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Is there any one who can tell me what this pretty flower is ?
The Picture was taken from a Hotel Veranda.
The leaf shape has me really interested.

Lupinus sp.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3b)

It's a lupin, Lupinus sp..

P.S. Glad you sussed out the photo posting.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Thanks Growin,
I am not surprised you knew exactly what it was.
This Picture was taken out the other window.
What is the plant to the left of the critter ? (some sort of wild berry ?)

altagardener,
When posting this new thread, I noticed you can only preview post first.
You can not send without previewing.
So I don't know why my Picture was left out.

Are there pictures of my first plant on DG ?

So... given that porcupines don't occur in Australia, I take you were visiting North America? ;-) I'd guess the plant to the left of the porcupine is alder.

Stamford, CT(Zone 6b)

Ginger, your photos do come up so I'm not certain what you're referring to.It may be that your not a paid subscriber, but I don't know if that is an issue on this forum.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I agree with altagardener - Alnus sp.

Yes Alta,
You are right on one point but wrong on the other.
I took these Pictures in Vancouver.
More Pictures later from Alaska. ^_^

But we do have Porcupines here in Ozz.
Here's a link: http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/33843

Thank you all for the ID.
I will put more plants on new threads.

Porcupines in Vancouver!? Say-what? I've never seen one before.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I guess it takes tourists from the other side of the world to spot these things.

We have ECHIDNAS here, The spiny ant-eater, one of the most primitive order of mammals, a monotreme. They are egg-laying mammals, and lay only one egg at a time. The egg is incubated in the pouch. Once hatched, it remains in the pouch until its spines appear.
They look like a hedgehog or porcupine but are not related. Their backs and sides are covered with spines and coarse hair.

That's too bad I didn't meet you when you were here as Canada Place is only a few blocks from my house.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Maybe next time.
I look forward to it.

The entire roof of this building is covered by grass.
I wonder how they cut it ?
Maybe they let Deer out on it at night ?
I wish I had learnt more but our stay in Vancouver was very short.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I was very happy to spot these two.
Have you ever seen these cute little Guys at Vancouver ?

Thumbnail by ginger749
Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I've seen those guys at the garbage dump.

The convention centre doesn't exactly look appealing to me but they were so insistent on native plants... Poor design in my opinion. Hope you enjoyed your cruise.

Errr, sure that's a picture of a porcupine from an Australian national collection of photographs, it seems, but please correct me if I'm wrong that porcupines have not been introduced to Australia... ? I'd guess the photo was from a zoo or similar, if photographed in Australia!
I see that Echidna are called "Australian porcupines", apparently, though, which is interesting. Goes to show that common names for animals can be just as misleading as for plants, I guess. ;-)

Looking forward to more plants for ID, ginger!

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

As a tourist in Vancouver, I thought it looked OK. ^_^
Grass Roof had me very amused.

These two Guys were snapped in the mountains, high above Vancouver.
Same two Bears as before.

You are completely right Alta.
The Australian equivalent is an Echidna.
I was www/wwrong. ;-)

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

This made me feel like I was back in KØBENHAVN.

Sometimes I see a shirt on her. Hockey jersey or something like that. Seagulls love to sit on her head. It's a great spot to sit on a bench, look at the mountains, watch the cyclists ride the seawall, and enjoy the bridge in the distance.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Yes Growin, Vancouver sure would be a great place to live.

OK, I finally found a Picture of the grass on the roof of the The convention centre.
I have got a Picture from a Hotel room far above this Building.
Need to look a little harder for it.

Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I was planting some palms, Podocarpus and Yuccas to the right of newly being built building on the right side only a month & 1/2 ago on a large patio. The Convention Centre had quite a bit of problems with leaking roof for quite a while and was rather embarrassing. If it was me, I'd have large swaths of Mexican Feather Grass, Echinacea, Rudbeckia, and alpine plants with nice blooms. I think they missed the mark with the design.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I thought it was just great how there were potted Flowers hanging all around central Vancouver.
Are any of them from your Nursery Growin ?
I am still curious why the steam was coming out of the top of this Clock.

Thumbnail by ginger749
Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

The City of Vancouver does do a nice job of public plantings, hanging baskets and street trees. I only work at a small retail nursery and previously at a large wholesale nursery. The steam clock is powered by steam: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_clock

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

We were in such a hurry that day.
She who must obeyed thought it was building up a head of steam to blow a tune at mid-day. ^_^

I know you have already said you live just a few blocks away from Canada Place.
Are you in this direction or more towards the Mountains ?

Thumbnail by ginger749
Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

more to the right.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

I don't really want or need to know where you live.
I just thought it would be fun if I did happen to get a Picture with your building in it.
This Picture was to the right. ^_^

lol. I thought I could wave. We had a cloudy, wet and cool summer. Sorry about that. Hope you enjoyed your visit.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

So was your place in that last Picture ?

This is also more to the right of the last Picture.

And yes I would have made contact had I known you were so close.

If ya would have looked out to sea.... Atleast you had a clear day without rain.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

This is out to sea.

I'm running out of my panorama Views.

Thumbnail by ginger749
Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

lol. no, no, a little to the left...

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

This is my last Roof-Top Picture.

I wonder if that's your Tennis Court ?

Thumbnail by ginger749
Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

I'm behind the really tall one. I'm waving now. Tennis? I wouldn't know how to play that if I tried. I think you can tie all of your images into a panorama software that knits it together.

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

What do you know about this Cannon ?
Is it really trying to blow 'THE VOLENDAM' out of the water ?

Thumbnail by ginger749
Beautiful, BC(Zone 8b)

The 9 o'clock gun goes off faithfully at 9pm each evening. Many years ago I wanted to surprise someone I was dating by telling them to stand next to it at exactly 9pm. I was never forgiven. http://www.vancouverhistory.ca/archives_gun.htm

The tricks we pull on others.
Must be a male trait ?

This is where the two Bears were snapped.

I just wanted to see what would happen. You were lucky to see the bears there. I've mostly seen them knocking down garbage on the north shore.

Bellevue, KY(Zone 6a)

What a great plant id thread! lol Just popping in to tell you that I really enjoyed the pics of Vancouver, and the great pics of wildlife. What a beautiful place--thanks for the tour, Ginger!

Brisvegas, Australia(Zone 12b)

Thanks KyWoods.
Did you know Melbourne is the capitol of one of our states ? (Victoria).
Trouble is all the mexicans come from there. ^_^

Is that a Maple leaf Tree to the right of this Hanging Bridge ?
This Picture was also taken up on Grouse Mountain.

Bellevue, KY(Zone 6a)

Yep, I know about the Melbourne down under...ours is all rural. It would be fun to visit yours!
