Demstratt what source do you have for ratting? If you meant rattling you left out the l which if added it would be to many letters.
Can't find it in my dictionary but I have been wrong before
I found ratting in my dictionary. That is something that terriers were bred to do.

Helen it's not in either of my websters which leads me to believe it's slang. Yes I have heard the term ratting relating to dogs especially terriers. So be it if it's in your book it must be so.
any of numerous long-tailed murine rodents, esp of the genus Rattus, that are similar to but larger than mice and are now distributed all over the world See also brown rat, black rat
(informal) a person who deserts his or her friends or associates, esp in time of trouble
(informal) a worker who works during a strike; blackleg; scab
(slang (mainly US) an informer; stool pigeon
(informal) a despicable person
See smell a rat
Word forms: rats, ratting, ratted
That is what the Collins English on line has to say about it.
