We just purchased 24 acres with a seasonal creek running through it. There are a few large trees along the stream that will stay. I would like to plant a variety of flowing bushes and trees that are also beneficial to birds/wildlife. We also have drier area up on hill that is closer to house. Please advise me of your favorites that birds/wildlife LOVE!
Need suggestions of bushes for birds
You might start by reviewing some past efforts to consolidate this type of information on this forum...
Lots of good stuff in here - and mostly applicable to where you garden.
And be sure to plant many varieties of your namesake...
Agree with ViburnumValley that where you are will dictate what is good in your area . Plants that work for me in the Arizona desert will not work for you . Would suggest that you check with a native plant society in your area;
There may be local chapters close to you.
Also look for local chapters of the Audubon society
also your local county extension agent
An organization called the Wild ones would probably be a good source for you;
I see that they have chapters in Missouri ;
One of the problems I ran into when creating a wildlife garden is finding out what birds live in my area. It is easy to find out what fruits/nuts/seeds each bird prefers, but if that bird is not found in your part of the country, it is all for naught.
Unless you are already a bird watcher, it would be easier to find someone (or a park or nature center or nursery) locally who has already figured out what works in your area. I was fortunate to find someone who purchased an empty lot next door to her house and turned it into a bird sanctuary with over 100 kinds of plants! And this is in a city!
