Black spots on pin oak

St. Simon's Island, GA(Zone 9a)

Any idea what this is? Black spots, and the bark is broken in places.

I would say you might need to contact your county extension agent.......... or if you have a college nearby someone at the college might be able to help you. I would guess that it is some type of insect infestation - but that is strictly a guess......... Sorry, i am not more knowledgeable about it.

Sorry i'm just now reading this, but you might try over in the 'Trees' or 'Garden pests and diseases' forums. Someone over there might be knowledgeable of tree diseases/pests. It looks like a boring pest of some sort to me but I'm no expert.
