Drywall scraps for soil?

Toronto, Canada

I recently finished with my home renovations. I have lot of dry wall scraps left over with me after this renovation. Could this be added to my garden soil? I believe that pure gypsum is not harmful for the soil. But does these drywall mixtures contain any chemicals which is harmful to soil? Thanks!

Well, they wouldn't have been worrying about making the drywall food-grade during manufacture. So they would not have hesitated to use gypsum that was not pure, as long as it gave them a smooth consistent product. So maybe it is safe, but nobody is going to say so, just to be cautious.

There might be some question about the paper glue. I think that the gypsum would be quite pure. I am quite familiar with the mining process and know that they don't use lower grades for Sheetrock. If it is not pure the other minerals will stain the paper. You might try calling the manufacture and just asking them about the glue etc.
