Unknown black armored beetle-like flying insect

Pittsburgh, PA

An armored creature that looks similar to the Dor Beetle but has a grey fuzzy head and club-like forward wing/arms. No idea what it is. Might sting, but not sure. Could be hymenoptera but not sure, certainly looks like a dung beetle except for its head. Flies, can hover and move in linear ways. The one in the picture was encountered near a forest / field on a road with a broken wing. Another one was encountered today in a forest. It was aggressive until a battle of wills forced it to flee. Seemed to have a long black stinger or maybe that was just its legs.
