Australian Magpie (Cracticus tibicen)
I had no idea that the Australian Magpies had been introduced to New Zealand. Is their territorial behaviour the main issue with them?
I love these birds. Their song is incomparable, one bird following another in a harmonious explosion if song. In late winter and early spring their beautiful chorus is heard all night long.
"A group of magpies will sing a short repetitive version of carrolling just before dawn (dawn song), and at twilight after sundown (dusk song), in winter and spring."
I have never heard them through the night.

Interesting. Over the last 2-3 weeks ours have been singing all night. It is a beautiful sound to go to sleep by.
I've had a lot to do with maggies over the years and have never seen one with an egg or nestling and have never seen any approach the nest of another bird or even chase a smaller bird, focusing on little lizards and beetles.
The male of any nest that has been the subject of torment by humans will attack during the nesting season, but people they know and trust can pass with impunity.
