Phlox yellowing- virus?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have Phlox Robert Poore and David next to each other. Both looked very good until just before blooming. Robert Poore started having individual stems turn yellow, then brown, , until now most leaves are dead or yellow, but with a lot of bloom. And David is starting to get it. Otherwise, the garden is doing very well with plenty of rain this year, all other plants near these seem in good health.

Should I remove these two and destroy? I have another big Phlox across the yard that still looks perfect. I don't want it to get sick.

How does the crown look? Can you tug on it gently without it coming out in your hand?

Here are the plants on July 24.

I've had that happen to a few perennials before. Check the base of the stems just below the soil to see if there are little holes in the stems caused by some boring insect.

never thought of something like that
