hosta seeds

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I have an NOID hosta that has a seed pod on it. I did not know these set seeds. What do I do with it?

If you let that seed pod ripen - about 6 weeks after flowering, you can collect the seeds and try growing them. However, you need to understand that hosta seeds will not come true to the pod parent. The vast majority of seedlings will be uninteresting solid colour plants. However, you CAN get such traits as red petioles, filly leaves, etc. passed on to the seedlings. But if you want more interesting plants (with margins or streaks), you usually need to start with seeds from a streaked pod parent.

That is USUALLY! I do have an interesting variegated seedling from 'last Dance' which is a reverse margination from the parent. So, you never know.

Thanks for the information. I'm going to try and collect the seeds and see what I get. Will be interesting.
