what is this fly like insect

brisbane, Australia

This insect bit my son twice with a painful sting and instantly left two large welts, and no it is not a normal fly, look at its legs and feet it had a very low profile.

Hi there,

Not been to Oz before but I heard you guys get horse flies out there and it kind of looks like that.

Minot, ND

It's a louse fly (family Hippoboscidae); they are obligate blood feeders, but humans are accidental hosts - https://bie.ala.org.au/species/urn:lsid:biodiversity.org.au:afd.taxon:52b3bcd3-7a51-4653-8a3b-9aebf0d74d01
