I first planted sunflowers unaware of how much the finches around here like them. (They practically hang upside-down to get at the full seed-heads.) Now, I plant them for the birds specifically, and just reserve a section of my garden for plants meant to attract/feed birds/butterflies/bees/etc. The only pests I've ever had to do battle with were tomato hornworms and turtles, though... The deer never bothered.
