Mystery weed - can anyone ID?

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm calling this a "weed" because I'm not sure what it is, but it's in my lawn and I want it gone. As you can see it has a remarkably robust root system. Can anyone tell me what it is and how best to eliminate it from my lawn?

Hmm. Considering its roots and the size of the plant, I'd say that it's most likely a tree sapling that's been mowed over/cut back a few times. It'd explain why it's so rooty. It could possibly be a roughleaf dogwood. They are common enough in the wood margins here in North Texas that they could have sprouted from bird or wildlife droppings.

My "mystery" weed was left unmowed for 2 weeks and several bloomed purple flowers. Now I suspect it's a Mexican Petunia.

I have a similar weed in my yard this summer. Also having a problem with Goose Grass this summer.

Mexican Petunia! I wish mine did well enough where they would actually spread!

Goose grass would be welcome as well.. better than the dirt/weed lawn I currently have 😂
