Dark green patches on my lawn (9a)

San Francisco, CA

My lawn is 1/2 acre or less, it was treated properly back in time, then abandoned, but now I'm slowly improving it's state. Still has a long way to come.
Itís St Augustine grass I lightly fertilized recently (10-10-10, as it was recommended), but it seems to me that some spots are looking green-ish than the others (the grass is taller so it looks like random patches). We don't have a spreader, so I fertilized it manually and now I'm wandering, could it be the reason? Would a proper spreader improve this?
And if so, any recommendations? Tried to have a look at the lists (like these https://wisepick.org/best-fertilizer-spreader/ ), but there are way too many options.
Backpack will do the job?

Sounds like some spots got more fert than others which can happen when doing it by hand.
