What spider is this?
This looks like Steatoda nobilis, one of the so-called 'false widow' spiders; it is a European species that has been introduced to California. It's bite can be quite painful, but in most cases, not medically significant. See https://www.jungledragon.com/specie/13888/noble_false_widow.html
