I would like to know how to tell a Phormium tenax ‘Yellow Wave’ from a Pandanus baptistii ‘Variegata’ (Dwarf Pandanus)? The nurseries here in Hawaii have me confused- they seem to be calling both plants by the same name- Dwarf Pandanus. I know that their flower morphology is significantly different, but both species take several years to flower (from a juvenile stage). Is there an immediate way to tell the difference?

The leaves on Phormium are in a dichotomous arrangement like the flat fan that one sees on Iris. Pandanus have a spiral growth pattern.
