SOLVED: what is it?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I have no clue what it is.......maybe some sort of mint. It has a smell if you break off a leaf and rub it. I can't quite make it out though since I'm not experienced in gardening yet :)

It grows like mad on the outside of the neighbors fence area. It's kinda fuzzy, the leaves are.

Susan, It looks like catnip.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

is that what it is? very odd that it's growing there like that :)

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

What's the smell like? Catnip has a sorta skunkish smell to my nose. I think it looks like apple mint.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

It look the same Catnip what I have here.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

went to the nursery and tried to find the stuff there. Closest I came to was Applemint. It's not Catnip, it doesn't look like the stuff they had at the greenhouse that was Catnip anyway. It has a kinda pleasant smell actually, I will have to go back out there and smell it again........LOL

Kitchener, ON(Zone 5A)

Could it be Lemon Balm?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

hmmmmm..........not sure.......I do know however that the whole plant is kinda fuzzy looking. Like it has all these tiny hairs on it, you know? I don't know how to explain it..LOL

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Ok, I smelled it again. It's not apple mint. Does Lemon Balm kinda smell sort or like a sprite in a way? I guess that's what it smells like

Kitchener, ON(Zone 5A)

My lemon balm has a faint lemony scent and is hairy like that one. It is also all over my lawn.. very invasive little beggar. Baa will know. She knows everything :)

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

It sure does look like lemon balm.

Altstaedten, Germany

Yes, Lemon Balm, Melissa

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

I was thinking Lemon balm also. my catnip has a scolloped leaf edge.If not. It should be in the mint family anyway.

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

Lemon balm has a much more scalloped edge leaf. I vote catnip (or maybe a natural cross between the two?) Lemon balm is a distinct mint/lemon smell. It is a very light green (almost chartreuse) when it first emerges.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I don't think it is lemon balm-mine is dark green, somewhat shiny and has a very heavy lemon scent. I think catnip smells more like urine or medicine and is more gray and hairy. I'm trying to remember what horehound looks like. I killed mine. LOL I can send you a pic of my lemon balm or catnip if they aren't in the database. I don't know about where you are but down here we have some sort of wild mint that sort of smells like pineapple and is furry like that. I have never really tried to find a name for it.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

this has a smell kind a like a sprite when you first open it up.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Looks just like my lemon balm. when you crush the leaves, does it smell like lemons?

Kitchener, ON(Zone 5A)

Perhaps there is more than one type of lemon balm.. or mine was mis-labled. It is identiacal to what I thought was Lemon Balm.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I'll take some to the roundup, maybe someone there can tell for sure :)

Gwy thanks for the vote of confidence LOL.

This is a tough one and I agree with Poppysue applemint would be my fist choice. I don't know what Sprite smells like but a similar woolly mint with a curious smell (to me anyway) is Bowles mint - Mentha x villosa 'Alopecuroides', some say its an apple/spearmint smell, others say strongly mint or strongly apple, to me it's sort of fruity, fresh. Plants smell different to different people so only Flowox can tell :)

Baa, Sprite smells like Lemon/Lime Fanta (Not sure if you have Fanta, we did in Germany). Lemon Lime soda pop
