You can almost feel the silkiness of the wings in your photo! An elegant moth, eh!

A male Polyphemus, Antheraea polyphemus.

I always thought the name was strange though - in Greek myth Polyphemus had only one eye! ;)

Actually, I've got a thing about Silk Moths - back when I was a kid and in my bug phase, while on a summer trip back to my daddy's house in Texas, my Nana showed me a big Luna Moth (Actias luna). http://pooh.unl.edu/~scotth/samantha/moths-butterflies.html?page=luna
Nothing remotely like that in San Diego, and I've been crazy about Silk Moths since. (One of the things that brought me to Japan????????)

Ahhh yes the Luna Moth, That is also one of my favorites! We had one here in the yard about 1 week before I got my camera, so I missed getting a pic of that one :( but there will be others I'm sure.
