Is this the beginning of a butterfly???

These little things are all over my flowering crabapple tree. I hope they're gonna be a butterfly and not some disease...anyone know? Pardon the out of focus, I couldn't seem to get things in order.

Can't really see it. Is it a caterpillar? or an egg casing? There are some butterflies that eat apples. The Striped Hairstreak is one. Unfortunately there are also some nasty moths that will devour apple trees. What state are you in? That will help with ID an too.

It looks like an egg casing to me. I find several that look like that but I have no idea who is in them. Sorry. :)

It's a hard *casing* of some kind, securily attached to the branch. I live in Missouri. This is a *crab*apple tree, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for trying to figure this out. If you could see this little tree in the spring, covered with pink blooms, you'd know why I'm so concerned. A real beauty.

Looks like a Praying Mantis Egg Case. Large one too!
