Coleus Chatters July 2-8

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Mmmmmm.....I'm hot & sweaty and would love a margarita right now Loretta! What's your recipe? I think I've forgotten my recipe (DH knows it by heart) as I've just been buying the bottle that is already mixed with tequila & all. It was easiest at the time and I continue....cuz I like easy! LOL

Sheesh! It is so hot here today and I'm frantically working in the gardens. I've never been so late at getting things done. And of course, I keep finding things at the nursery that I think I 'need'! Will I ever get done? LOL

Hey got a new boyfriend? I know I shouldn't be like that cuz Frank is such a great guy, but I just had to rib ya about it! Shoot....we almost had you fixed up with Tom.....remember?

tobee....I hope the knee is much better! Take care of yourself, you surely sound like you work too hard!!!!!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Peel and core the little YELLOW mangos (they look like a yellow potato)
Slice and Dice the mango meat into little squares about 1-1-1/2 inch
One can frozen Bacardi Margarita Mix
3/4 of that same can full of Light Bacardi Rum (adjust from there, more or less)
3/4 of that same can full of mango chunks
Triple Sec to taste
Put everything Into the Blender and fill remaining space with ice
Blend until smooth
Pour into a Margarita glass with Salt on the rim (or sugar, if you simply must ruin a perfectly good drink)

Call me...

AHHHHHHHH, yes....Tom......

Are you going to have any White Hots and Chocolate Chill?

Ok. I already know this is a set up, but, what are White Hots and Chocolate Chills?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

So glad you asked, GG.

I come from Rochester, NY and there is a company called Russer's. They make all sorts of preserved meats, which you may have at your deli, and also a White Hot. They evidently make it just for the region, because outside of Rochester, save Buffalo, you can't find them. They are a pork product and are just too good. When I'm in Rochester to see my boys and GKs I sometimes freeze a pack and bring them home to FL.

As far as Choc Chill. That is the name for choc milk in an 8oz carton. Why it is called that I have no idea.....I have loved a CC for 60 years so it goes back a ways.

Does that help?

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I buy mine already mixed too...Too lazy and when I did mix my own they were to strong...GG your recipe sounds good...
Hey Hap do you know where Corfu at???

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

So, A white hot is a slice of deli meat? Like a balogna or ham slice? Or is it a sausage? I love those little Bratwurst sausages!

groveland, FL(Zone 9b)

ladies..remember: "you are what you eat"...i'm not wanting to be a sausage! prehaps a hotdog??? but it has to be kosher i don't want all those preservatives in me...or wait....maybe i do! maybe they could preserve everything??

margaritas??? no greygoose on the rocks with a bit of fresh lime. we work like men and should drink like them! (i really can't handle them much anymore...had one martini yesterday and made me go to sleep...ahhhhhhh i have turned into a cheap date.

back from tp...i have been apparently a very bad naughty girl and i got in much trouble. there is absolutely no cheating with this guy...shoot he can tell when i have been bad, even though i iced and iced it before i went! dh is out tending the garden while i'm resting...i'm going to rest myself to death!

well, we hope to relax by the pool tomorrow if dh can throw the dozen bottles of bleach around the stagnated water surrounding the area. now, doesn't that sound fun!

brinda...seems like so many of us are so late this year. but i think i figured it out. it appears that i'm sure there was a time you recall when you could nurse the baby, wash the floor and speak on the phone at the same time. now it takes us twice as long to do half the the work!!i still can't figure out how i could do a garden, full time job, mother, cleaning, laundry, being santa, being easter bunny, drinking, dancing.....and that was just one day!!! hehehehe. now it takes me at least a year to do all that. ahhhhhhhh

I know exactly where it is....It's on Rt 31 (?) just west of Rochester and I believe before you get to Batavia. A hundred years ago they had a very large African Violet GH and were noted for miles around. When I used to go between Rochester, my home and Buffalo, where I lived for 4 years, we always went thru it because we could not afford the toll of the T-Way.

Why do you ask?

Lincoln Park, MI(Zone 5a)

I have a friend that lives there...It's about 3 miles from Batavia...She has a Country Store called Just Browsing in Corfu...I think its off of 5..I bet your GK'S go to Darrien Lake to 6 Flags...

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I don't think that they go there. I have never heard them mention it. Think I'll take them there next summer. This summer is going to be a cruise for all, there will be 11 of us. Oh, what a time we will have. yipee.

I took them to Darien when it was only a campground with a dug-muddy-pond......that was their "pool". They had outhouses with showers....cold. That was the whole story. I'm talking about 1965 or so. How times changes things. Does your friend know about the old GH with the violets? It was quite big as I remember. We stopped one time but with my budget back then, I couldn't buy anything. It's hard to save on 100 bucks a month with 3 kids.....

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh GG, that's sounds like s great recipe. and Mangoes are 2 for $1. right now.
I also will take a hot dog albeit Hebrew National's low fat with your wolf's no bean Chili. Add some good chopped valdalia onions and some Lay's PCs and I'm in heaven.
I like Hormel's no bean Chili too and will take either.
I put the Hominy recipe in Hap's Kiwi thread.
Nite all gotta get in the garden at dawn.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Good morning!!!! Where is everyone?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Here I am, Miss America.......breaking into song......

Got my DH cornered today and I hope that I will work him to death. Which means in his terms, about 1/2 hour. LOL It's a beautiful morning here and can't wait to get going. He has to have his cereal first....ugh. why eat when there's a whole world out there that has to be cleaned, shaped up, etc. !!!!!!

See you all later.

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

OOOH, "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" (doing the George M Cohan/James Cagney dance)!

To be followed by :"You're a Grand Old Flag, and a High Flying Flag" while my parade of myself, two Doxies and a cat march smartly around the patio!

This is my FAVORITE holiday! My father, my late DH, my late BIL and my country all have a birthday today. Also, the first watermelon of the year was always cut at the family picnic.

I have a tiny cannonball watermelon cooling in the fridge. I will cut it this afternoon, and while the juice drips off my elbows, and I revel in the sweetness of it's taste, I will enjoy sweet memories of days gone by.

Happy 4th to all my friends and HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!!!!!

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I Love you Ms Pati and I too will celebrate the 4th. We are having NY strips, salad, mashed potatoes and strawberry shortcake. All by request.
I'll also take cutting this afternoon.
Then about *pm we will go downtown to watch fireworks.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Happy 4th y'all!!!

I forgot to watch this thread, and kept wondering where y'all were at. Sheesh. Now I'm playing catch up again.

What a bunch of gorgeous pics everyone has posted. And it seals it, I'm moving to Tobee's house next week! I'm also loving Sticks fence.

Welcome and thanks Dixie about the horseshoe wreath, I can't wait to get it. I like to pretend I live on a farm. =^)

Pati, I'll be thinking of you especially today.

Everyone be safe!

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Good Afternoon everyone and Happy 4th of July to all of you!

I'm on the run right now, but I just wanted to say hi to Pati and tell you that I have visions in my head of you sitting out eating your watermelon and holding all your memories close! Love ya!

Well I'm the proud owner of a Honda F200 tiller. Now, what to till? It's light weight and I am tickled. I did tell the poor fellow that Dayne's daddy bla bla to cool his jets. He still wasn't totally discouraged.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That's good sugar.....da, da, dada........

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

I think the tiller is 26 years old so it's a good one......and worth about $60.
I will be redoing one little area that has many trumpet vine roots in it. I just have to be carefull not to cut-up my PVC sprinkler lines.
I am trying to find out about digging a shallow well now using water pressure to drill with. Water is just 30 feet below the ground here, if that far.
Also wondering about what kind of pump? A sunken one, or a surface pump?
Any advice folks? I will tie it into my existing sprinkler system.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

It looks like you are going to have fun with your new toy. Just don't let me see you riding down the street with it in control. How many gears? How long does it take to go from 0 to 60? Thar she goes, folks........

As far as the well, I think zoning laws will make up your mind for you. LOL They seems to have a say on everything.

Have a great day all.

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Happy, I'm hiding that thar well, but it will be within 15 feet of my neighbors who never use theirs.
I have been out doing cuttings again. took severa Le Flumes and the plant hasn't even winced.
Where is Brinda and tobee,GG, Joni, Heather, and all the rest of you lurkers??

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Joni, about that edger you asked about. Many weed eaters have a hing close to the head that allows them to be turned 90º to become an edger.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Happy day after!

I was in my YARD all day yesterday, for the first time in 1-1/2 weeks. Mosquitos were swarming and sent me inside crying last week. Too rattled to go back out. But, DH finally got a fogger and hit the yard Monday and Tuesday mornings. Sooooooooo, I potted up Sago palm puppies and cleaned out the Sago nursery/potting area. Back breaking labor, since there was all kinds of discarded STUFF (DH's) back in my area. And since he was NOT around to object, it all went away...far, far, far away....And I can now walk up to my area unobstructed, clutter-free and organized!

When he got home I told him to come lsee what I had done all day. He saw all the potted puppies in the front and was halfway through to the back saying, "I see, I see what you did. I see the palms." Then he turned around toward the nursery and had to shut his mouth in mid-sentence when he really saw what I had done.

His comment then was, "You're back is really gonna be hurting tonight!"

I just smiled.....

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

That's terrific and I give you five gold stars for yesterday. Hope your back is okay this morning.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

My back was fine last night. I think the hard physical work forced some of those muscles to loosen up. I'm having trouble with my ear -- that kept me tossing last night. I have something called "Meniere's Disease -- a catch all term for what they can't figure out, although some of the symptoms are really obvious. My left ear feels like when you get off the plane and then you yawn and it "pops" and the pressure releases. Only, my pressure never releases. It feels "full" all the time. Last evening I just hung my head over the side of the bed. Felt like if I stayed there long enough the pressure would release and all this water would come running out, and I would be CURED -- never happened.

Then there's the vertigo that happens when I do yawn. I lose my equilibrium sometimes, and this is happening more frequently. They thought it was just sinusitus at first, cause I'd be walking down the halls at work, and just start to "tilt." Now, when I yawn, or sneeze or even laugh sometimes it goes out! I refuse to give up my life, so I'm learning to compensate lightening quickly when the equilibrium goes out. You'd not even notice, and I'm not letting it get me!

So far, I've only had ONE bout of all the major symptoms at once, and I'd rather lick the freeway than go through that again. The vertigo wouldn't stop and I got nauseated to the point I could not move. My ears were stuffy and ringing. I crawled on the couch like a baby and just let the world spin. Awful, awful, awful. Potato chips helped settle the nausea...Bummer.

And after that bug that crawled in my ear, everytime my ear flutters from the Meniere's I remember the bug. So, yeah, I had a pretty restless night...

Crosbyton, TX(Zone 7a)

sid...i think i am too retarded to work one of those kind...i have tried...and they hate me....i just want one of those old lady kind that i put on the ground and roll along the side walk

Taylor Creek, FL(Zone 10a)

Does it have to be elecric?

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Good grief, GG......what a mess! My DM had a lot of the same symptoms you describe, as well as a hearing problem. I took her to an Ear, Nose specialist after all regular doctors failed to help. It took two weeks of treating the ear with a warm oil wax melting stuff until he could finally remove a ball of wax that was...and I swear this is big as my thumb!!!! Apparently it had built up so deep in the ear it couldn't be seen with a regular exam. It cured her vertigo.

Sugar, I want one of those "old lady kind" that has a gardner like on TV to push it along! LOL

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b) he a cute gardener Pirl?

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you all had a splendid 4th of July!

Sidney, you're coming up with so many great tools. I hope you do get your well dug....that will be a great thing for you to have. I water bill came on Monday and it was $240.00. Ouch!!! I think DH is gonna hook the hose up to the neighbor behind us that has the well. I sure hope so.

Here is the breakdown on my water bill....Oh how this ticks me off!

water usage 39600 gallons $152.22
sewer $71.33
and other misc charges including garbage of $14.72

I just hate paying high sewage bills when all the water goes on the plants or in the pool. There has been a huge controversy going on with city hall and people like me that have pools and water their lawns and plants. I'm tellin ya, it's hiway robbery!

GG, sounds like you moved mountains yesterday! Wow, I wish I had that much energy. I seem to be moving in slow motion since I hurt my back. It doesn't hurt now, but I do think of it everytime I go to move things.

I've been the babysitter for two days and I'm exhausted! LOL That little guy keeps me on the run constantly. And now that I'm home all I want to do is take a nap and I need to be outside working.

Where is tobee and Heather?

Fort Pierce, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi shirleyt. I lurk more than I "talk" because I have a very hum-drum life compared to these people.....but they never mind when I chime in with whatever 2 cents I'm pushing that day. (grin)

Welcome, there's never a dull day HERE!

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

That's right, MM. Speak up. We'd love a newbie here.

Yes, Sugar and I met last year and what a hoot we had. We got the rest of the gang in S. FL together and had a blast. I hope that we will be able to have a repeat of that this year.

The rest of us have just met here on the coleus forum. We share laughs, tears, sorrows and blessings. Thank the Good Lord is mostly the later.

So come on in, pull up a chair and join in our chats.

Welcome to the gang!

I'm the not-so-new-anymore Newbie. I guess I'll be passing on the baton. I'm also a newlywed (11/19/05)

"I spent the morning making babies...."

Now, ShirleyT, that is open season, if I ever heard one, in this group. They were being polite. Fess up, ya'll...
