Black Swan (Cygnus atratus)
Where did you see this swan? I never knew there were black ones....and I didn't even realize you were from MI to...lol
My sister lives off the river in Chesterfield and they have two family's of white ones....swan fights are not pretty :( but the babies come right up to the dock to be fed they are so cute!
They have quite a few at the W. K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary (where this photo was taken) in Augusta, (western) MI. They're actually from Australia, so don't be too surprised that you haven't seen them wandering around in the wild. :)
Here's a link to the sanctuary's site:
and here's a link to more of the photos I took there (if you're interested):
I agree they're pretty aggressive when they need to be. One of the trumpeters followed my friends and I all the way around one of the ponds, snaking it's neck out and keeping low (like it was ready to attack). Even if it had, the trip was more than worth it.
If you like birds, you'd have a great time at the sanctuary. You can pick up a bin of feed when you leave a donation at the gate and you'll have piles of new friends by the time you've reached the first pond.
