Wanted Papilio, Red Lion and Apple Blossom!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, I would love to trade for a mature bulb of each of these varieties. I have over 200 daylilies and many hosta and iris to trade. LMK
Thanks,
Teresa

no one have extras?

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

I think I have a Red Lion. It is blooming size if that is what you mean by mature. It just finished blooming a week or so ago. I have attached a picture and you can confirm that is what it is. I thought I was getting something else and when it bloomed it was solid red, so I don't know for sure.

Just let me know.

Hello Teresa

I HAVE one specimen of "Red Lion" (one scape just appearing) and I would give it to you but alas I am located so far away, transatlantically *LOL*. "Red Lion" is a rather old hybrid and, after direct comparison with "Red Pearl" I think the latter is a considerably more attractive cultivar. HOWEVER, I would wait until October when the first bulbs will be available in the supermarkets - and in specialised stores, respectively where you will acquire bigger bulbs and better quality. In Germany, the "old 'n famous" hybrids "Appleblossom" "MInerva" "Orange Sovereign" "Red Lion" and "White" (mostly Ludwig's Dazzler I presume) are still available reliably season for season, and I am rather certain that you will find bulbs of these hybrids in your location, also :-)
Interestingly the situation as to acquisition has changed for the collector of Hippeastrums to advantage . One decade ago, it would have been rather difficult to find other than the standard cultivars mentioned above - from the sources mentioned above. But, the situation HAS definitely improved from-then-on: Nowadays, IF I keep my eyes open (like Mariava recently recommended) and THEN I can discover bulbs and, with even far higher likeliness, potted bulbs of, let's say, more "exotic" hybrids in supermarkets and in flower stores. I luckily obtained "Charisma" and "Exotic Star" in a local supermarket this year, and "Reggae" and "Striped Panther" in a flower store last year. On the local openair weekly vegetable market and at a garden discounter shop I discovered "Red Pearl" some y ago and this season again. Go become the Amaryllis bloodhound pardon -Detective like me ;-)

Your specimen is a cultivar other than "Red Lion" - @Shuggins. The leaves are "boat shaped" (rather broad and partially rolled upwards) which provides a good stabilization against bending. This property is typical for "Orange Sovereign" but, however, is not present in "Red Lion".

Wow, you are a little far away lol. Across the big waters.

Shuggins, do you have only one color? Anything else to add to the trade box? I would hate for it to travel alone.

I agree with HAWEWA, I find his advice very helpful.

Most of those you named you can get for $5.00 around Christmas.

tranquil, are you able to leave any type of them out over winter? Do you have the St Joseph ones?

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

bluegrass...It appears that what I have isn't what you are looking for. If you are still interested, I can send it to you. I don't really have any other extras at this time. I also don't really need anything in trade right now. I can find a small box and mail it to you if you would like. JLMK.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

OK, I would love to take it off your hands :)

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Great. Are you in the address exchange?

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

yes, but to save you time.

I will try to get it in the mail tomorrow. First, I just have to find a box.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I have mailed bulbs/rhizomes in the manilla envelopes or the bubble envelopes, if you cannot find a box. Just put crushable on the outside. 1st class should be fine.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

bluegrass...I haven't forgotten about you. Last week was a mess. I will get your package mailed this week and let you know when it goes out. Sorry for the delay.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hey, don't worry about it. I was the one that had forgotten about it lol.
I have a house full of company this week.

Did you receive the package that I sent? Just wanted to make sure it got that. Thanks!

Chapin, SC(Zone 7b)

Hi Teresa,
If you're still looking, I have all 3. I have Casa Blanca, Red Lion and Apple Blossom mixed if you don't mind taking a chance on what they are. The Papilio is easy to tell but I don't think the others are.

Les
