pruning az

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

I would like to prune my azalea to grow up kind of tall like and not out wide and round.
Can I do that? when is the best time to prune them?

Hurst, TX(Zone 7b)

Pruning can start after flowering has ended and before the plant begins creating flower buds sometime during or after July-ish. Note that the normal growth habit is a genetic trait and therefore the variety that you bought may not be what you need because it might require too much pruning effort. For example, Coral Bells Azalea likes to spread, Cheerful Giant tends to be round so these would give you more trouble than R. Anna Rose Whitney (tall and erect). Some plant labels will give you the growth habit; other times, you need to research it further in books or the Internet.
