1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 egg yolks, beaten lightly
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons milk
1 cup sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 egg whites
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 pint heavy cream

Preheat ove to 350 degrees. Sift flour together with baking powder. Cream butter. Beat in sugar and salt, then egg yolks, vanilla, milk and flour mixture. Spread mixture into two round greased cake pans (it will be fairly thick and just cover the bottoms of the pans, don't worry if it looks like there's hardly any.
Beat egg whites until just stiff (but not hard). Add sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, then spread on unbaked mixture in both pans. Sprinkle with sliced almonds and cinnamon sugar.
Bake for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Let cool some, remove from pans, then put together with whipped cream between the two layers.
NB: Cakes may be frozen individually.

  Extra Notes
this recipe has been made on a regular basis for at least three generations in my family. it is a very simple but beautifully elegant dessert, never failing to elicit oohs and aahs before, during and after ingestion!
