They also enhance with the sound and the life in and around the water. Building a pond takes some hard work but once it is done you can relax nearby and enjoy the serenity and ambiance only a natural pond can provide. Start with a sound basis and pond maintenance is relatively easy and takes little time, leaving more time to simply gaze into the limpid pool.

The building blocks of a natural pool start with the design and must include an aeration system, phytofiltration, and some tiny cleaners in the form of snails, bottom feeders and fish. An aeration system brings oxygen into the water and can be done with a pump or with a waterfall. In a native pond that has occurred naturally, there is inflow from a stream or other source and outflow to a basin, lake or irrigation ditch. This creates a constant supply of fresh oxygenated water. A situated pond doesn't have these benefits and requires a source to bring the oxygen in for plant and animal health. Without proper aeration the pool will become stagnant, a breeding ground for mosquitoes and any life inside will not maintain health.

Phytofiltration is another process that occurs without human intervention in a native pond. Over the seasons, plants come and go around and in the water. Plants are important oxygenators and filter the water while adding nutrients as they go through their life cycle and then compost. OF course there can be too much of a good thing and installing plants to enhance and enrich your pond should be done with an eye to mature growth, environmental requirements, invasiveness and compatibility. Plants like large leaved lilies can also help prevent excess algae growth by filtering the light in the water itself. They also keep the water cool so fish are comfortable. Aquatic grasses are useful for removing carbon dioxide released from fish gases to promote a healthy chemical balance in the water. There are a wide variety of marginal and aquatic plants from which to choose.

Animal life in ponds not only add interest but can be wonderful cleaners. Snails and fish eat algae that can overgrow and clog the ecosystem. Beneficial bacteria may be purchased that increase the efficiency of biodegrading organic material. They produce enzymes which also help break down waste and phosphorus compounds. Any invertebrates also encourage healthy pond balance and nutrient breakdown.

Weeds can become a problem in a pond run without chemical additives. They are easy to manually remove if you keep a pool net around and compost nicely in your bin or pile of organics. Invasive species may find the consistently moist region in and around a pond an attractive place to set up housekeeping but vigilant pulling and skimming will keep any problems down to a dull roar. Barley straw is effective in ponds that have been overrun with algae or neglected. It releases hydrogen peroxide, a natural substance, as it decays which kills off the algae. Leave it in the pond for a week or so and then skim it out to prevent excess silt as it composts.

The natural cycle of a well designed pond will keep the water clean and safe and the enjoyment you receive from a healthy water feature will increase as you master the techniques necessary for the situation. So dip your toes in the water and let the dog drink out of the pond. You have nothing to fear and everything to gain.
