Viewing Families in the Order "Uropygi" (Tailed Whip-scorpions)

Tailed whip-scorpions are nocturnal carnivores that feed on millipedes and insects and can grow to a little over 3 inches long. They have a long thin tail without a stinger and capture their prey with their strong front appendages. Most species live in crevices and plant debris in hot, dry desert areas of southern North America but they can also be found in Central Florida and in tropical areas everywhere except Europe and Australia. The Whip-scorpion lifespan is up to 7 years. They spray predators with an irritating acid to repel them. After mating, the female carries her eggs on her abdomen and once hatched the young stay on her back until their first molt and then go off on their own.
