The posted specimen was perched on a reed rising out of a special stream in the Bitter Lakes NWR. The refuge has developed a dragonfly zone, complete with a shaded viewing stand, located below the main waterfowl viewing area, within easy walking distance from the parking lot. The Flame Skimmer was joined by a male Desert Whitetail, which will be posted separately. The Flame and Desert Whitetail are approachable for photos.

The Bitter Lakes NWR is reported to have the largest concentration of dragonfly species, and damselflies, of any known area in the continental United States.
