Magnolia Species, Saucer Magnolia, Tulip Tree (Magnolia soulangeana)

My first bloom this past spring on a new tree.

The fuzzy buds are are interesting additions to the plant and one can hardly wait until the open. Shown at the end of February. (San Antonio, Tx.)

A bud ready to open in February. (San Antonio, Tx.)

A partially opened bloom at the end of February. At all stages, the buds and blooms are interesting to observe. (San Antonio, Tx.)

This is what the bloom looks like on the inside. It emits a heady smell that I don't like. Sofia, Bulgaria. Zone 6b

A ripening seedpod...

June..Magnolia tree in my backyard..foliage.

Ovaries..most are not fertilized and will be shed, only a few will carry seeds.. the pollen ripens later than the stamen and needs at least a temperature of 20 C

Growing hugely PINK at Filoli, an historic estate in Woodside, California.

As flowers fade, leaves emerge along with seedpods.

Seed pod starting.

I know that spring is finally here when my Saucer Magnolia tree blooms.

Beautiful specimen in zone 9b- Walt Disney World, FL. This was taken in April of 2010 after a cold/long winter- otherwise this far south, saucers can bloom as early as January.
