King Sago [Cycas revoluta] with a "pup" in the foreground.

Bloom of the female King Sago. Maybe a hundred seeds will set under that fluffy looking stuff. Seeds will be bright orange and the size of a walnut when ripe.

This is the male bloom of the king sago cycad. I think it's interesting how it resembles the female bloom of many conifers.

Cycas revoluta seeds - They doesn't appear in cones but in special filaments, see the photo of islandjim

An other male plant - all my picts are taken on the Canary Islands, where this plant are common in all kinds of gardens.

10-year old, 4 ft tall Sago Palm is growing in front of my house in Rockledge, Florida (32955). The main plant now has 2 heads and numerous smaller Sagos all around its perimeter

Here's a larger plant at a local garden in Los Angeles, CA

This is a massive and very old plant (over 50 years... possibly closer to 100) growing in a botanical garden in Orange County, Ca (Fullerton Arboretum)

This Cycas revoluta, Sago Palm is happy being in a container sitting on my deck year round in Western Washington. Have had people ask if it a pineapple.

The seed "baskets" look medusa-like. The parts tenderly holding the seeds resemble delicate hands. The seeds are covered by a somewhat fuzzy material which I cleaned off of one to show the Easter egg color. There are many, many seeds inside the "basket". (San Antonio, Tx,)

I was amazed to find 100s of seeds in the sago palm's "basket" when I peered inside. The seeds are covered with a furry substance which holds debris that has fallen into the "basket". I left the seeds as found, did not clean them off and rplaced their covering back on them. (San Antonio, Tx.)

Dried seeds found under a sago palm. The one at the top still has the outer reddish colored coating on it. I am sorry I forget to put a coin to show their size. (San Antonio, Tx.)

Female Sago Palm

A very old (hundreds?) specimen at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, Pasadena California

The same Sago Palm seeds I photographed in October just about ready to picked and cleaned in the latter part of February. They are said to be viable for only 3 months. (San Antonio, Tx.)

This one has remained pretty well the same size over the past 2 years, very slow growers.

A new addition to our yard in Coastal AL. She's a baby, but she is doing fine....

End of mature leaf on outdoor plant showing the typically deeply 'V-d' leaves that make this plant easy to tell from all other Cycas sp.

Interesting Sago with a curved trunk recently transplanted from shade to sun.

Plant that was not purposely fertilized this year, yet still some sees obviously some pollen made it to the female cone- some obviously fertilized seed along with a lot of smaller unfertilized seed.

these are in someone's yard of their condo which they use as a summer home on Hilton Head Island

pups with rot cut off of them. rot is gone when there is only hard, white or tan tissue, and when dropped in water, it sinks.

Second set of fronds this season!!

This one appears to be coming back after too much neglect. I think I'm going to give it to the neighbors once the new leaves are fully relaxed.

wonderful collection of very old plants, southern California, Huntington Gardens

Doesn't have to grow giant. You can keep it small and cute in pots! Indoors OK. Soil dry between watering.

Plant with a nice pot to match your decór.

New comb is opening.

Almost complete. Love the curly tips!!!

I wished the palms stayed like this (with the curly tips) forever.

Closer look at the curls.

Is now about 35 years old.

Jinnah Garden Lahore,Pakistan

transplanted somewhat dormant plant, currently leafless, but should be pushing a new head of leaves in the next twelve months

nice specimen for sale in southern California nursery... this would be a challenge to move without damage!

early male cone (note: seeds around the circumference are from overhead palm, not this plant)

this poor plant was attacked by scale, but it is unique in that the leaflets are almost all divided- rare mutation

close up of split leaflet form of Sago Palm

another shot of this split-leaflet form... the yellow spotting is from a previous scale infestation

Infertile seeds on another plant still embedded in hairy material.

if one has enough Sago Palms, this is an easy way to fertilize accepting female cones: just put an open male cone on top and leave it for a week until female cone closes back up again

Very woody, almost fossilized trunk base of a very tall, old plant, Los Angeles.. can see the small suckers forming at the base.
