Queen Palm, Cocos Plumosa, Jeriva (Syagrus romanzoffiana)

Here are some younger plants in Santa Monica, California

Queens are commonly 'bent' on purpose for lanscaping uses. They are planted in large boxes and then the boxes are dumped on their sides. Several years later the Queen has grown a right angle and is planted, hoping to duplicate the look a of the more tropical Coconut Palm

The smaller palm on the left survived our severe freeze this jan 07 (2 nights w/ 18 degree temp). the one on the right was planted in march 07

Nov 07, zone 9b/10a central CA. There is a smaller one to the right, barely visible, whose growth was stunted by unusually cold temp this past Jan.

Young Queen just starting to bulge at the trunk, meaning it will begin to skyrocket soon. very common throughout central and southern CA.

Freeze damaged frond at 18 degrees for only an hour during our jan 07 freeze. This spear was inside the crown at the time and nonetheless got damaged pretty badly.

It has taken this young queen 10 months to produce a healthy looking frond after a severe freeze in Jan 07 (low 20s for a week). It's companion queen died and was replaced later.
