The Banyan is a very large, wide-spreading tree, producing aerial roots which fasten themselves to the ground..




This is a pic of me examining the base of a HUGE banyan tree in Honolulu, Hi., at night time. This tree is somewhere along the main strip in Honolulu.

On Waikiki beach in Hawaii, preserved officially as an 'exceptional tree' of Hawaii

unfortunate that people feel the need to autograph trees- Hawaii in tourist area

Small one growing in Malawi on the easter arid side. To get aerial roots or 'Banyan', don't trim it.

Kerala India 1997. These trees are huge, and a convenient source of shelter for the rickshaws!

Just part of the largest Banyan in the U.S. - Edison-Ford estates, Fort Myers, FL - 191 ft crown spread, 62 ft tall

Brownsville Texas taken 2/24/2005, across from Russell Elementary School in a front yard. These areas are fairly alkaline and somewhat clayey soils.

This tree goes on forever, all one tree with many support trunks.


Ficus benghalensis growing at the San Diego Zoo. Aerial roots have started on this young tree.

Here is one that I have had growing for the past 11-12 years. It began as a house plant, but I moved it outside about 5 years ago, but bring it in when we have frost warning.
