Seed pod for Datura Metel

This pod opened this morning to reveal the seeds. When the pod opens like this, you should cut the pod off and put it in a cup or a bag, and let it continue to dry naturally. The seeds will eventually fall out into the container.

Datura inoxia 21.8.2002 second flower open

Even as an infant, this plant puts out a tremendous bloom. Notice the 12" ruler for reference.

Looks at these beautiful blooms-their fragrance is so beautiful.

Taken 2AM June 2, 2002. Beautiful night bloomer. Pollenated by a moth.

Picture was taken at dusk just before flowers opening.

Picture is just after flowers opened in the evening.

We have always called this plant 'moonvine' because it blooms beginning at sunset, but after a local news story that showed seeds and what local kids were doing with them, I had to do a search, and sure enough, it's NOT moonvine! Not sure what to call them now, as 'jipsonweed' is just not as romantic!

If you are happy enough to live in a zone in which Datura metel is hardy, then this is what it looks like in the spring. :) This plant just came back from the root about 2 weeks ago, and look how big it is already!! I expect blooms within a couple more weeks.

Seedling, approx. 16 weeks old

A 'small' sample of just how large the roots of this Datura get. Long and deep. Don't plant it unless you intend to keep it for a while. ;-)

Seeds started inside 3/12/07, bottom heat, sprouted in a few days, here they are on 3/21/07

The plant is from one tiny seed!!!

These flowers are very fragrant -- Love the aroma!!!

Seed pods form after blooms

Harvested & dried seeds form seed pod. Try to harvest seed pod as soon as it splits as not to lose any seeds.
