Tradescantia, Purple Heart, Purple Queen, Wandering Jew 'Purpurea' (Tradescantia pallida)

Really stands out amongst sweet potato vine.

Around the base of a young lemon tree. Early spring. Still young and short purple heart will fill entire bare area in about a month.

"Purple Queen" does well in rich soil, well watered, and partial shade. Fantastic small pink flowers adorn end stalks all season. Left unchecked, in a pleasing environment, one could imagine total ground coverage thru self propegation.

Plant under full sun. Winter. Guaratinguetá, midway between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

The bee helps show the scale of this small delicate flower

Growing great in Orlando, both full and partial sun. Also, they seem to root well for new transplants.

A great, easy to grow groundcover

Grows in sun, shade, and inbetween.

Purple wandering jew growing in full sun. It can be used as a ground cover for erosion control. The inset photo shows it growing all the way up the incline. (San Antonio, Tx.)

Closeup of two flowers of Purple Heart plant. Grows outdoors in the ground in S. California. WTH.

Growing full force downtown, in cement pots, at the Endicott Library, New York State Zone 5a

'Purple Heart' sure does provide some nice color in borders even during the hottest part of summer.

Fall and Early winter bloom, Shade Photo.

Tradescantia pallida, at Fort Worth Botanic gardens,

Perennial here too it appears. Here w/ Begonia Major.

Abundant growth near our pond, always have some to share.

There are 3 plants here that have been in the ground for about 15 years. 5 minutes once a week keeps them under control.

Left out in a freeze, this plant will bleed purple. Makes pretty snow! psp

October 28, 2008.

As it grows the purpleness gets much lighter.

This one stays outside year round (Phoenix, AZ). It is a few years old, but it gets trimmed back regularly.

Lovely as a potted specimen on a deck

1/10/2012 unusually warm winter - ideal for concrete areas of a patio (invasive & needs shade from hot summer sun)

Athens, Alabama (Limestone County) - outdoor groundcover, somewhat shaded (11-11-2012)

I can't help taking pictures of this to see the hairs which are 'beady'!
