In its broadest sense, conservation means to preserve from harm or decay or to protect from loss or consumption.

The term is often applied to farming and gardening practices that protect natural resources such as soil (terracing, crop rotation, etc.) or minimizing water usage (drip irrigation, mulching, choosing drought-tolerant plants, etc.)
