A term used to describe shrubs, trees or vines which do not die to the ground during winter. Landscape professionals and gardening books frequently refer to woody ornamentals as the backbone of the garden, referring to the fact that they maintain a semblance of the garden during the period when herbaceous perennials and annuals are not present.
