Attempting to grow plants that are rated for a higher USDA Plant Hardiness Zone in a climate that is too cold for the plants (e.g., growing Zone 10 tropical plants in Zone 8). Generally, some effort is made to provide protection from frost and freeze damage to keep the plants alive in winter.
