Definition as written by langbr:

An old-fashioned term used to denote soil that is limy or alkaline. Originates from when settlers moving westward would stop at a desirable homestead site and test the soil by tasting a bit of soil. Alkaline soil has a sweet taste especially when compared to acidic soil which is sour.
