Definition of lignotuber

Categorized under "General"

Definition as written by Terry:

A swelling at the base of the stem of certain plants, found at the soil level or on underground stems or roots. The lignotuber stores starches and dormant buds.

Lignotubers are often found on mallee (Eucalyptus) trees in Australia, which help the tree survive fire and other stresses by sending out new growth if the topgrowth is destroyed.
