One of my favorite books about California gardens, "The Gardens of California" is filled with beautiful photos of historical and contemporary gardens and interspersed with text highlighting landscape theory and personal stories about gardens, both large scale and intimate.

Nancy Goslee Power is an insightful and creative landscape designer whose practice is based in Los Angeles but she has installations world-wide. Her work and thinking on landscape design is worth knowing about and if you can find this book in your library or bookshop, it is a very worthwhile read.
